Faking a Hate Crime? What Should Happen to Jussie Smollett?

Featured Replies

If he wasn’t being written off he will be soon enough.

It sounds like the show's producers are actually continuing to back his side of the story. I love it that he refuses to turn over his phone because "he has personal pictures and videos on there". What a bunch of baloney.

  • Part of me feels that way, and another part of me thinks he absolutely should do jail time. As seriously as I think hate crimes should be treated, I think faking one should be treated equally as harsh

  • This all made me go back last night and re-watch Dave Chapelle's bit on Jussie Smollet (french pronunciation). ?

What he did was wrong, period. No matter how any wants to spin it.  I have absolutely no idea what an appropriate punishment would be. I would agree with Ru's statement. Figure out a plea de

The media complains about the public not trusting them or being called fake news. But they continue to make the same mistake of rushing to judgement or forming an opinion before all the facts are known. It also isn't a coincidence that the rush to judgement seems to be heavily to one ideology.

One of the basic repercussions, I think, should be having to pay for the cost of any and all police and governmental wages & resources used to investigate the "attack". Plus then added restitution and some kind of serious community service or maybe even a little jail time to boot.

And for now they should back him. Until he is charged and proven to have staged the whole thing the best course of action for them is to continually back him publicly.

I’ve honestly thought the media has done a good job in regards to this case. They’ve reported the case as it has unfolded. If anything Jussie has been the one being judged more than anyone else.

Eghhh...I hear what you're saying here. But I think part of this, which is what makes everything such a tricky situation, is the fact that we as a society expect our news to be as late breaking as possible. This is almost a month after the fact that we're now learning this is appearing to have been staged. Do we want to get all of our news a month after the fact once everyone has the chance to investigate every little detail and make sure it's legit? Not in reality. The media's big catch 22 is having the responsible to get us our news in a timely fashion while still having the responsibility and obligation to make sure it is as accurate as possible. That's really tricky when you have non-media dirtbags actively lying to make stories up.

In 1994 Susan Smith told the police that her car was hijacked with her two kids in the back. That search for the hijacker was national headline news for a week or two until it was discovered that she rolled the car into a lake, herself, and drowned her two children. Should the news media have been waiting to cover any of that until they found out the whole truth of the story? Of course not. They needed to report that.

There are SO many factors in news reporting that make it SUCH a big challenge to do accurately and do well.

I'm not really sure what the punishment should be, to be honest. It should be stiff enough to discourage people from doing it, up to and including jail time, IMO.

Whatever the resolution, it should include heavy psychological counseling.

Did the Media Jump the Gun on the Jussie Smollett Story?

I know after the fact CNN tried to paint this picture but as this article shows media across the country jumped the gun.

That was the story that was given from Jussie himself. Then he began backtracking. I’m not sure how the media can be blamed for reporting what was told to them.

There were actual media members criticizing the use of the word "alleged". If we can't even use terms like this without it being labeled in a negative fashion the news media is dead.

I just don't know what is so hard about using caution when a story checks every box for red meat for specific agendas. Regardless of which side or agenda.

And while I refuse to defend CNN it should be noted that TMZ was the first to report the story and everyone piggy backed of what TMZ was reporting.

It is the context of reporting as fact without verifying the story and the wording of the headlines . Then the multiple media members on Twitter injecting opinion and some cases threats of violence against imaginary perps. Headline should read Jussie Smolett claims racist and homophobic attack.

Easier said than done.

I don’t care about a headline. I care about the truth. I’ve been saying for weeks that I hate having the mindset that I hope a hate crime actually went down and not a staged one. He clearly has some mental issues if the investigation shows that he staged it.

Also, I’m more interested in seeing what a lot of the gay black journalists that I follow on twitter have to say once the investigation is complete. They have been very vocal for Jussie. What will they say when the investigation shows they have been duped?
