The 2019 KHSAA State Wrestling Championships sponsored by the U.S. Army ROTC begin Friday morning at Alltech Arena, with gates opening for fans at 8:30 a.m. and first round matches commencing at 9:30 a.m. Tickets to the State Wrestling Championships are available for purchase online at GoFan - The largest high school ticketing solution in the U.S., including a discounted online-only $30 all-session pass.

 

Friday’s opening session will continue through the third round of the championship bracket (bouts 1-616). Saturday’s opening session begins with third round consolation bracket matches at 9 a.m., and continues through the sixth round consolation bracket matches (bouts 785-812).

 

The medal round session is scheduled to begin with the KWCA awards at 3 p.m. followed by the consolation bracket finals for third, fifth and seventh place. Upon conclusion of the consolation bracket finals, the competitors in the finals will be introduced and the first championship match will begin. Awards will be presented following each bracket final, with the team trophies awarded after the last championship bout.

 

Results will be available at KHSAA.org throughout the event, with official championship photos of Saturday’s action posted within 72 hours of the finals. Fans planning to attend the wrestling championships should be advised that there is a $5 parking fee at the Kentucky Horse Park.

It’s been for quite a few years now. Looking at the KHSAA site, 2007 was the first year they had a small school “division”

 

Scott’s top 5 overall performance is pretty impressive considering they only took 7 wrestlers to State and only finished 5th in the Region 6 tourney.

It always fascinates me when a school consistently shines in a "specialty sport"; particularly wrestling, which was my high-school sport. Kinda reminds me of when Dan Gable and Iowa were the cream of the crop back in the day.

I don’t mind the KHSAA giving a small school trophy but that is hypocritical of how they treat other sports.

Wrestling is kind of a hybrid. It's not really classified in the sense that both "divisions" compete at the same tourney, not seperately. The team title is also skewed sometimes since in wrestling, some regions are way weaker than others, and those teams in those weak regions qualify more wrestlers than teams from strong regions. There are guys who don't qualify for state every year, that could win some of those weaker regions, and win matches at state.

 

At least the KHSAA does recognize the large school/small school difference somewhat in wrestling. Now if only we could get them to get away from the random draw, and seed at least the 8 region champs, so we stop seeing #1 vs #2 in the quarterfinals.

They are absolutely loaded, and their backups would be studs on other teams. One of their backups last year, won a state title this year. I got to see them up close at state duals, and they were impressive.

I’d say there’s more in play in that region than just Union’s success. McCracken has made a serious investment in facilities and coaching, starting at the youth level. They want to be successful and are putting there money and efforts where their mouth is. Christian County also has outstanding coaching and leadership in place. Wrestling is no different than any other sport...it takes a commitment and a plan to be good. And with wrestling being on the fringe in this state, it’s possible for teams to make up ground quickly.

Seems like Union County has always been a wrestling dynasty - they were a big name when I was a UK freshman in 1977, and here it is 40 years later, and they're still going strong. Congrats Union County! Not up on today's powers, but in my day, Hoptown, Christian County, Trinity, St X, Woodford, Boone County were up there too (and a few more regulars).

 

what REALLY gets me, is UK was ranked #4 (mainly because of the Carr family), and they dropped the sport in the middle of that season! Who drops a program that is ranked in the top 5?!? I know people will blame Title IX, but I understand there were other options that could've been chosen, but the all-mighty dollar dictated the events that came.

Best sport around. Sorry, it just is. Great tournament, some great matches, but great googley moogley we've got to find a better venue than AllTech Arena.
