Kentucky to roll out new "Voluntary Travel ID" variant on their standard drivers licenses starting this March in order to meet TSA requirements for domestic air travel. The Voluntary Travel ID will be required in order to fly domestically without having to also present a passport or another form of approved travel ID once the TSA's new requirements begin in October 2020.

Kentucky's normal drivers licenses will still be available for $43, and the new Voluntary Travel ID drivers licenses will be available beginning in March for $48. You can check THIS LINK for the state's county-by-county roll out schedule for the Voluntary Travel ID licenses.

If you want to upgrade to the Travel ID when renewing your drivers licenses, you will need to bring your old ID to surrender to the clerk's office, proper proof of identity (US birth certificate, US passport, permanent resident card, certificate of naturalization, or certificate of citizenship) and proper proof of address (home utility bill, rental/lease agreement, deed/title to residential real property, USPS postmarked letter, state or federal tax return, voter registration card). All ID's issued by Kentucky will be valid for 8 years.

I have Ohio's verified ID and the security measures taken on it compared to the classic KY license I had earlier this year are remarkable. It's vastly more detailed and I see why they're making such a big deal out of them.

I am struggling to understand why the state doesn't make this the standard and why it took so long to do this.

I haven't seen it written anywhere definitively, but I believe the intent is for it to become standard after 2020.

I just renewed my license a month ago. Can I get the travel ID license now or do I have to wait until my license comes up for renewal? Will the state give a credit for part of the cost of last month's license?

You can get it as soon as your county starts processing them.

Doubtful on credit...but I don't know.

My dad showed me his Ohio one backduring the holidays. My questions is, what does Ohio do that requires them to mail you the ID later on, versus Kentucky apparently being able to do it on the spot when you turn your old one in?

It's going to be the same in Kentucky after the rollout. Don't know the process, but it can't be done immediately, whatever it is.

I believe they mail the Kentucky ID as well.

From the first post, it says that you are to "bring your old ID to surrender"...so, what are you going to have to use in the mean time?

In Ohio they punched a hole through my old one to show it was no good then printed out a piece of paper that functioned as a temporary ID. They handed them both back to me and said I had to carry both with me all the time until my new one came in the mail.

From what I understand, because KY's county clerk handles the licenses, and there are so many counties in the state, it was a huge expense and undertaking to get every county clerks office the necessary equipment to process and be able to handle the new licensing requirements. I think that's why they ultimately went to mailing them, instead of being able to produce them on the spot. It is annoying that the state resisted doing this for long. I just renewed last year, but since I have a passport, I'm not in that big of a hurry to get the new license.
