KY to roll out new "Voluntary Travel ID" drivers license starting March 2019

There was an article in the local paper yesterday about this. Some comments from our Circuit Court Clerk...

"The biggest takeaway is for folks to be patient as this roll-out occurs," McKee said. "If your license doesn't expire until 2020, please try to wait until 2020 to renew your license so we don't have all of Henderson County coming in to renew their license and get a new Voluntary Travel ID all at once ... we've had a lot of people asking about it."

"The truth is, the federal government has given approval to use your current and unexpired license to board airplanes until Oct, 1st, 2020," which almost two years away.

They will arrive in the mail: Residents will continue to visit the Circuit Court Clerk’s office (at 5 N. Main in Henderson) to apply for a new credential, either a standard license or Voluntary Travel ID. But the requested credential will arrive in the mail at the address provided by the applicant 5-10 business days later. Applicants will leave the Circuit Court Clerk’s office with a 30-day temporary printed document until the requested credential arrives.

This is because the IDs are no longer issued by the county clerks -- they are now officially issued by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. The local clerk's office only collects and processes the information.
