April 19, 20197 yr OSU loses another qb due to Fields coming in. Makes sense though, because it is Fields job for the next 2 seasons. I don't think this is the issue and Fields was not a 100% lock to have this starting job. While it most likely would have turned out that way, Matt was pushing hard and hearing from one of my former players who just left OSU for the draft, Matt has a cannon for an arm, can run just as well, and this certainly was not like Martell's exit. In reading his departure letter, it really sounds like the young man was homesick and wanted to play closer to home and his head just wasn't right at this time. While it puts the Buckeyes in a huge bind if Fields was to get hurt I do wish the young man well. The Buckeyes will find a way and they usually do a pretty good job of protecting their qb's as, to my knowledge, they have never lost a starting qb to injury.
April 19, 20197 yr Welcome to the new age college football. If you’re back up QB is any good he will portal his way out.
April 19, 20197 yr Author I have no issue with Baldwin leaving. Whether it be homesick or not winning the starting job. Wish him the best and will root for his success wherever he lands much like Joe Burrow last year. But if something were to happen to Fields, the season will likely be over for OSU. Fields isn’t a statue like Haskins either that they could just have hang out in the pocket all day and reduce injury risk. Fields will be running the ball a lot. That’s a scary proposition for OSU. OSU is going to have to look for a viable backup for Fields, but anyone worth their salt is going to want to start and they aren’t going to start over Fields obviously.

Braxton Miller to a season ending injury during training camp and J.T. Barnett during the Michigan game. Cardale Jones made his first start for OSU in the Big Ten Championship game.

It's crazy the domino effect a transfer can have. Fields couldn't beat out Fromm, so he left rather than not start. He goes to OSU, and two guys leave because they know they wont start of Fields. It's really crazy to think 3 of the top 5 qbs most likely this coming year would have been on Georgia's roster at some point.

With the interesting QB storylines. Georgia, Ohio State, Clemson, and Alabama will all have 2 former QBs likely starting at major D1 schools this year. Ohio State will have Burrow (LSU) and Martell (Miami). Georgia will have Eason (Washington) and Fields (Ohio State). Alabama will have Hurts (Oklahoma) and Barnett (USF). Clemson will have Johnson (Northwestern) and Bryant (Missouri). These have been 4 of the 5 best programs in the country for the past few years. The other one would be Oklahoma who is taking a completely different route entirely and will start a transfer QB for the 5th consecutive year. This is the just the price you pay for being a top program at this point.

Cardale Jones made his first start for OSU in the Big Ten Championship game. Well aware of OSU QB history. My point was losing a starting QB from game one in the season. Braxton was hurt before the season started throwing a pass in practice. True, JT started that Michigan game, which he never should have been in as the game that late as the game was well in hand and he certainly had no business running the ball on the injury play. Overall the point I'm making is that while injuries can occur at any time the OSU O-line traditionally keeps their QBs upright and healthy.

Far too much work to do on the passing side of his game IMO but certainly has the capability but I still think the other 2 qb's are ahead of him for the Canes.

Martell certainly has had a shaky spring by all accounts. It’s not a lock that he starts by any means.

April 22, 20197 yr Author So before Fields came in he was the heir apparent at OSU, but he's third string at Miami? Pretty big recruiting miss by someone in Columbus. Martell was recruited hard by basically everyone in the country. I personally see Martell starting at Miami. He’s the most talented guy in the QB room IMO.

Tate was #2 dual threat behind Tua. You place your bets and hope for the best, or you place your bets and replace it later on.
