Teams Targeting Carson's Knee

As it turns out, ESPN's NFL Matchup isn't only about breaking down film. It's also breaking some news.

On this weekend's edition, the show featuring Sal Paolantonio, Ron Jaworski, and Merril Hoge contains a surprising revelation.

Film study of last week's game between the Bengals and the Falcons indicate that Cincinnati quarterback Carson Palmer was instinctively lifting his left foot off of the ground in order to protect his left knee from contact.

And, as Paolantonio candidly observed after Jaws broke down the tape, "It is obvious guys are diving for Carson Palmer's knees. Memo to Park Avenue. The head of officiating, Mike Pereira, needs to look at that tape."

Jaworski then suggested that it has been a common phenomenon this year in every Bengals game: "It's been pretty consistent, you know, when you watch Carson Palmer. I've looked at all the tapes and people are going down low at Carson Palmer."

So what next? Paolantonio reports on ESPN's Sunday NFL Countdown that Patrick Kerney was fined $5,000 for a low hit on Palmer last week, and that the league office is putting out the word that "swan dives" at Palmer's knees (or any other quarterback's knees) will not be tolerated.

Enberg and Cross were talking about this too. I'll have to watch this a little closer.

Taking shots at carson... officials need to keep an eye out on this type of things.

Falcons were at CPs knees all day last week. The officiating is at all time low in the NFL. I think a shakeup ( starting with firing Mike Carey) is way overdue. These guys are way to comfortable, as they know that no matter how bad they perform, ther are no repercussions. Make these guys more accountable and their performance will improve. Thats human nature 101

If people are going to come at Palmers knee, like Cowards team did. The Bengals are going to have send a message to the other team. Bottom line.

You could send a message to the other team...or you could do your job and just protect Carson.

You can only protect him so much, they will break their block eventually, and if they choose to hit him low... well eye for an eye

You're right, I just recieved a memo from coach cowher all the way back to last year telling all steelers: aim for #9's knee. Man let it go, carson has , the team has, if only the fans would, you might not be still living in last year. At least we as steeler fans have a reason to live in last year.

Well what is one of the main reasons why teams are going after Palmers knee? It is because the Steelers hurt that knee, so of coarse its always going to be back to that hit, because if it wasn't for that then we wouldn't even be talking about this now with people going after his knee...

Is that the excuse we're using now for why Carson is throwing so many bad passes?

Nope. Just thought it was interesting to hear from the national media...

Why are you guys so upset? Come on your in the books forever... the NFL created a new penalty after your team and players :thumb:

I don't know why any team would do this...stupid if they do. I havnt watched it while Ive seen the Bengals play so far this year...but I havnt really been watching for it either.

I didn't see the show, but I get the feeling what I posted might be a bit of a cut and paste by Profootballtalk. I think the issue at hand is not going for his knee, but rather diving for his estimated plant spot...

You could send a message to the other team...or you could do your job and just protect Carson.
