BluegrassPreps Class 5A Football Rankings (10/15) Discussion

Class 5A

Covington Catholic's margin of victory keeps shrinking as their schedule gets closer to November, but the Colonels extended the state’s longest active win-streak by outlasting Highlands. Bowling Green was humbled when they were completely over-matched by Warren Central, Indiana. The Purples had better hope there is no hangover from such a beating as South Warren would love nothing more than to celebrate their second consecutive win against their cross-town rival. Southwestern keeps rolling and are starting to believe a 10-0 regular season is in the cards. The Warriors still have one more major hurdle to clear, and you can rest assured rival Pulaski County would love nothing more than spoil Southwestern's party. One more undefeated team is yet to be mentioned. Anderson County got a big win over a tough Montgomery County team. The Bearcats draw Madison Southern next. Southern gave Coach Peach's boys their final two losses of the season in 2017.

1. Covington Catholic vs. Dixie Heights

2. Bowling Green at #3 South Warren

3. South Warren vs. #2 Bowling Green

4. South Oldham vs. North Bullitt

5. Southwestern vs. #10 Pulaski County

6. Highlands vs. Greenwood

7. Anderson County vs. Madison Southern

8. Owensboro vs. Graves County

9. Oldham County vs. Bullitt East

10. Pulaski County at #5 Southwestern

I know Highlands has lost a couple of games but seems like they should be #4. Nobody in Kentucky has given Covington Catholic that kind of game in a while.

Interesting rankings. I guess Ram predicts Southwestern and South Oldham would both keep CCH below 21 points and keep it closer than 7? Still no love for the Birds this year. It will play itself out in the playoffs. I said it from the start of the year. BG, SW in the west. CCH and HHS up north. Everyone else is a clear notch below those 4.

It would be hard to move Highlands above Southwestern. They are undefeated, have blasted almost everyone on their fairly tough schedule AND they have a better win than any win Highlands has (beat 6A #6 Henry Clay, who has a win over Scott County, who destroyed Highlands).

South Oldham might be ranked too high. I could see them at #6 with Southwestern at #4 and Highlands at #5.

So by that logic Southwestern would beat Cincinnati Moeller? Since Highlands lost to Cov Cath by 7 then I guess you could say Highlands would beat HC by 25 points?

It’s not good practice to measure up like that. Plus SC has been an anomaly.

I get it, they are undefeated, but I know what I saw Friday night. Nobody in 5A outside of Cov Cath wants to play Highlands. You can rank Highlands at 26th, please. Whatever makes you feel good. We will see soon.

To start with, I don't do these rankings. There is a group of people that do a tremendous job in ranking teams from all over the state and they are people that watch these teams in person and on video and put in a tremendous amount of time to make sure this product is better then most.

For the topic at hand, yes Highlands had a great game versus Covington Catholic and has got everyone's attention. But, that game does not change the entire body of work by Highlands and other teams in this class. They have moved up and will continue to move up if the their play, and the play of other teams, warrant it.

Good luck to Highlands and I am sure everyone is anxiously awaiting the rematch with Covington Catholic.

Be interesting to see where BG is ranked if they drop another game this week. I get that they played a team “on another level” and all that and got pummeled but the “pummeler” beat a down T team by one I believe.

Look at Southwestern's entire resume and give us your opinion on where they should be ranked. That is what I based my post on, not one game by them or one game by Highlands.

I would make the argument Southwestern would be behind Beechwood, let alone Highlands. Not overwhelmed by their schedule. If they played Highlands's schedule, they would likely have two losses as well. That's what makes ratings fun and maddening at the same time. You just never know and reasonable minds can have different opinions.

I would say T and BG both bit off a bit too much this season.

T lost at a strong Carmel IN team by 3.

Lost at home vs Warren Central IN by 1 (lost 3 starters at least this game.

Lost at Moeller by 7.

Lost at home to Male by 14.

Lost at home to a strong Napierville IL team by 18.

I don't see any team associated with KY earning a winning record with that schedule.

My point is that injuries have played a big part in T's losing streak, as the T team that played WC likely hasn't been on the field since that time.

I just think you are spinning this without all the info.

BG went to WC on their Senior Night. Tough assignment is all I'm saying.

That T team is not the same team today as it was the first few games of the year.

I still would like to see where BG will be ranked if they drop another game this week especially if it is by more than one score. Is a two loss BG still in the top 5 in 5A?

I have no dawg in the fight but a few stats from both Southwestern and Highlands.

Highlands wins are over 3-5 Cooper, 5-3 Campbell County, 2-6 Ryle,5-3 Lexington Catholic, 7-2 Simon Kenton, 0-8 Dixie Heights. Combine record of 22-27.

Southwestern has beat 2-7 Jeffersonville (IN), 2-6 Dunbar, 5-3 Henry Clay, 2-6 Madison Southern, 3-5 Central Hardin, 4-4 South Laurel, 5-3 Lincoln County. Combine record of 23-34

Both teams have about the same quality win with Southwestern having a win over Henry Clay and Highlands win over Simon Kenton.

Not sure really what that is supposed to mean. Doing comparative scoring like that doesn't really tell the story. Weather, field conditions, injuries, rivalry games, etc play a part. Highlands vs CCH is a big time rivalry game that was played in the rain. Some players were out that may play next time (if I read the blogs right). Next time they meet could produce a totally different result. Last season South Oldham beat Oldham County 16-6. An intense rivalry game played much closer than anyone thought. Highlands beat Oldham County 34-7 in the districts. Those comparisons meant nothing when Highlands played South Oldham.

Would South Oldham hold CCH to 21 or below. Who knows -- they won't play unless they both get to the title game. South Oldham held CAL to 21 in the first game of the season without their best player on defense. Pretty sure CAL would not have scored 21 with him there. Only DeSales has kept CAL that low in scoring. But this season South is winning the games they have scheduled convincingly (except CAL). I like where they are until someone knocks them off.

I do hope South Oldham ups their non-district schedule next year and challenge themselves a little more.

All of the Highlands faithful, who you couldn't find with a search warrant the last few years, have come out from hiding.
