New playoff setup draws ire: Coaches have many reasons for dislike

Featured Replies

The football coaches felt that the discrepancy in size in the current A and AAAA classes was too great and felt that going to 6 classes would alleviate that problem.
Five classes would have done the same thing.

The change in the playoffs was not the idea of the football coaches association. It was the idea of the KHSAA to reduce travel costs and poor gates. While the gate may be poor when the 4th place district team has to play the 1st place district team again a week after the 1st place team just beat the brains of the 4th place team in, but based on past year's the gates were also very poor when the 4th place team of one district had to travel a long distance to get its brains beat in by the 1st place team of another district. But at least the travel costs and time will be reduced for the 4th place team under the new arrangement. That in and of itself will be an improvement.

The football coaches may not like the change, but I have to tell you that a whole lot of superintendents and principals, who are concerned about the money issue, really like it a lot. And anyone who says money should not factor into high school sports is living in some type of dream world in my mine. Unless there are a whole lot of high schools flush with excess cash (and there's not) the KHSAA was looking out for high school sports when it voted on this new format.

I don't think that the financial benefits will be quite what the KHSAA projected when it went to this format.

We'll see.

The 6 classes has zero, and I mean zero, to do with trying to work out a compromise on the public private split. You can believe me or not, but the 6 classes came directly from the Football Coaches Association, that is predominantly public school football coaches. The football coaches felt that the discrepancy in size in the current A and AAAA classes was too great and felt that going to 6 classes would alleviate that problem. They also felt it would result in more teams being state champions and more teams making the playoffs, both of which the football coaches felt was a good thing. It was totally their idea..

I think it does have something to do with it. The approval of the 6 class system was done on the heels of rejecting the public/private playoff split and could be seen as way to placate some coaches wanting the split by placing fewer teams in the T/X classification. It may have been easier to reject the move to 6 classes (bypassing 5) if they split playoffs proposal wasn't recently rejected.

We have a whole lot of prima donna coaches in this state who like to complain. At the end of the day, is there really a whole lot of difference if Highlands has to play CovCath in the second round vs the third round?

It does make a difference. Assuming the seeds hold, under the previous system CovCath would only have to beat the winner of a LexCath/Highlands game, not both in back to back weeks to advance to the semifinals.

For those talking about money as a factor let me give you this situation.

Last week Belfry played Shelby Valley in the middle of a monsoon. The rain, coupled with Belfry's perennial dominance of Valley, coupled to produce one of the smallest home crowds in recent history. Belfry then proceeded to jump to a 42-0 halftime lead before winning with a running clock 49-6. In the game, Belfry completely dominated and at halftime had over 300 ttoal yards as opposed to 30 for Valley.

Tonight, they play again. If you are a fan who missed last game and saw the outcome would you go? Why should you?

This, coupled with the fact that many fans of both sides who were at the game last week and witnessed the blowout, will result in probably the smallest attendence for a Belfry home game in recent memory.

Meanwhile, with the old system. Even though Belfry was usually the clear favorite in the first round in year's past, usually the staidum was either 3/4 full or full for the first tilt.

The new playoff system is going to take money away from Belfry tonight.

I would just like to say to those of you out there that keep going on about weak 4 seeds. In NKY 1A, our "weak" 4 seeds have been successful in playing other district's NO.1 seed. As far as attendance goes, I know that the people of Ludlow are very supportive and my guess would be that the Bellevue and Dayton fans are the same. We've gone to playoff games in the past and had many more fans in attendance than the host team. Bring back the old system...

Not true. This came from the KHSAA ... they sprung it on everyone this summer with no advance warning on the premise that it would solve travel issues and increase attendance for early-round games.

While I think your post is true...I also think it has to do with the complaints by the publics. It was also another way to appease them.

I get the feeling there aren't too many people that went to a Beechwood Round 1 game in the past. Same with NCC. Same with Cov Cath. Same with Highlands...

Here is the difference. If your four seed is so bad that they got beat by 56 they they are going to get beat that bad traveling to another district's one seed.

Not true. You should know this based on NKY's #1 seed's performance versus Trinity's district.

2001: Boone (1) loses to Shelby County (4) 17-19, the same Shelby County team that lost to Trinity by 29.

2002: Boone (1) beats Oldham County (4) 34-28, the same Oldham County that lost to Trinity by 38.

2003: 10-0 Conner (1) loses to 4-6 Shelby County (4) 15-21, the same Shelby County team that lost to Trinity by 45 and 39.

2005: Dixie Heights (1) beats Shelby County (4) 31-24, the same Shelby County team that lost to Trinity by 38.

Thats my point. In the NKY district, the four is usually competative with the one. That is not the case in the districts bought up where the one seed beat the four 56-0. There will be a much larger gate in NKY this weekend playing one another than playing Ballard, Shelby or so on. They are replays of rivalry games.

NKY might be the only place that this is good then. Everywhere else in the state people are unhappy with it.

We're all not happy in NKY with it. I would still like to see our 4A district matchup with the eastern Louisville distirct.

What would Somerset have to do with a Southwestern coach? I really don't think your post makes much sense but please clarify.

Southwestern coach? I don't even know what you mean by that. Your post does not make sense.

I have heard that Somerset is really fighting to get the public/private schools in separate championships. Is that hard to understand?

Jim Sexton, Eastern H.S., is the man causing most of the uproar so where do you come up w/Southwestern coach? Sexton is not involved w/athletics as a coach.

Beechwood's first rnd games have not been heavily attended if that is what you are implying, 2nd rnd have been so-so but the third rnd is good which is usually BHS/NCC game.
