New playoff setup draws ire: Coaches have many reasons for dislike

Featured Replies

Five classes would have done the same thing.

I don't think that the financial benefits will be quite what the KHSAA projected when it went to this format.

We'll see.

Perhaps 5 would have worked, perhaps not. But at the end of the day, the move was not made to come up with some compromise on the public/private split.

We can only hope that there are the savings hoped for. If not, I'm sure the KHSAA will revisit the issue.

Beechwood's first rnd games have not been heavily attended if that is what you are implying, 2nd rnd have been so-so but the third rnd is good which is usually BHS/NCC game.

Right...

Thats my point. In the NKY district, the four is usually competative with the one. That is not the case in the districts bought up where the one seed beat the four 56-0. There will be a much larger gate in NKY this weekend playing one another than playing Ballard, Shelby or so on. They are replays of rivalry games.

Your post have really not made that much sense at all, you on this post go completely against what you said in the other post. He showed you that other districts 4 seeds have been successful against other districts one seeds. NKY in 4A might be the only district that doing this is good for, but Im not so sure that many of the fans in 4A are happy with that either.

You say how if a 4 seed gets beat by 56 to the one seed in their own district, it is better than getting beat by 56 and having to travel a far distant but that is not true at all either. I know in NKY in even 1A for example there is a good chance that our 4 seed will get beat by 56 to our one seed because it is usually either Beechwood or NCC. But if the 4 seed gets to go play against another districts one seed they realisticly have a better chance. And if anything the kids probably would believe they have a better chance to, because if you get drilled the first time you played that team in the regular season, you really dont get to look forward to the playoffs as much as you would playing against a team you haven't played against and may believe you have a chance against.

Yeah for some schools this new format is ok for them, but for most schools in Kentucky it is not.

I get the feeling there aren't too many people that went to a Beechwood Round 1 game in the past. Same with NCC. Same with Cov Cath. Same with Highlands...

Yeah that may be true, but since these top schools dont get much attendance in the first round games, then everyone should have to get things changed? I mean Im sure these schools you named usually still make pretty darn good money during the playoffs still because they usually make it pretty far and have more chances for home games...

I know for other district one seeds when they play atleast a NKY 3 or 4 seeds they end up getting a pretty good draw at the gate still because all these fans in NKY travel really well to go watch their team. I know for alot of fans they probably dont mind having to go travel for a game because their team is in the playoffs, and they get to look forward to going to another school they haven't seen that year and playing them.

So yeah for some schools like the teams you mentioned their draws at the gate might not be that good in the first round, but they usually still end up making alot of money during the playoffs. While their are also plenty of other one and two seeds though that do still get a good draw for their first round games, because the fans in the district travels well.

I know I just really dont like this new setup at all, and just dont seem like the playoffs to me in the first round, because you just got done playing against all the teams in your district, and now you get to turn around and play a team in your district again right away in the first round...

While I think your post is true...I also think it has to do with the complaints by the publics. It was also another way to appease them.
I really don't think the public-private issue had anything to do with the new playoff system.

Six classes ... I'm sure the public-private thing was a big part of it.

I thought your point was

OK, you are correct that this can not apply to the schools that are in Trinity's district. When your talking districts that cover several counties down state, their is a larger desparity. That desparity is very normal between Trinity and the other members of their district. My point to this thread is, how does it hurt to replay your regular season rivalries in the playoffs? One answer was that if you get beat 56-0 by a one seed, it is less exciting to play them again. My point is that you are normally going to be hurting against any one seed, except for the few exceptions, unless your one seed was one of the best in the state. I like the idea of one team coming out of each district, then one team coming out of each region. After all, shouldn't you have to win your region before you win state:D . Now I know that some people don't agree, but so be it.

It also does not apply for many other districts besides just trinitys. See post #48 and you will see that. As I said before maybe just in NKY 4A is the only district where this new playoff format works well, but I bet many fans of those teams would rather it not be that way though either...

...but you can also blame the KHSAA. The new playoff format and the new 6 class system are ways the KHSAA tried to "compromise" with a public/private split.

I wish things would have stayed the same with 4 classes and the old playoff system.

Be careful not to confuse your opinion with the facts. The public school superintendents were largely behind the new change, wanting to address travel concerns as well as getting tired of being beaten by the same old teams.

Many coaches resent the fact that the KHSAA chose to format football like basketball, with teams guaranteed to play the same teams in your district for the first two rounds. I've heard more than one coach say that they don't want football to be treated like basketball.

If this format had come to a vote of the coaches, it would have failed miserably.

I personally don't care how the coaches would vote. They need to just shut up and coach in the division placed instead of trying to lobby for some path to the finals that is easier for themselves. You still have to win five games in five weeks. Whether you play the strong team in week 2, 3, 4 or 5, its about on the field performance. The pitiful part is now an entire legion of coaches have another excuse for not winning.

I think it does have something to do with it. The approval of the 6 class system was done on the heels of rejecting the public/private playoff split and could be seen as way to placate some coaches wanting the split by placing fewer teams in the T/X classification. It may have been easier to reject the move to 6 classes (bypassing 5) if they split playoffs proposal wasn't recently rejected.

The 6class proposal was in the works four years before there was ever even a proposal dealing with financial aid divisions much less the split. The proposal had to be done this year because the old alignment was expiring.
