September 23, 20188 yr After Vontae Davis famously quit the Buffalo Bills at halftime on Sunday, Drew Magary asked his Twitter followers about their best quitting stories and then compiled them into a Deadspin article. I'm doing the same here. So below, post your best quitting story. This should generate some laughs!
September 23, 20188 yr Author I'll start: One summer in college I was taking classes and hoping to work part time. I took a job at Kroger, supposedly as a cashier, but it ultimately turned into stocking and bagging. I worked there for a month, progressively hating it more and more. After about three weeks I was done. I called the boss and said I wouldn't be in - it was about five minutes before I was to start. He said "if you quit, you can never use us on a resume!" I responded, "I'm going to school to be a teacher, why would I possibly list three weeks bagging groceries?" and hung up. Kroger still handed out checks at that time so I went on payday to pick up my final check. As I walked in, the juxtaposition of facial expressions from wishful former coworkers and a disgusted former boss was totally worth it! I never worked in a grocery store again.
September 23, 20188 yr 18 years old, had a job as a lot boy at a local Jaguar dealership. Started on a Monday. Thursday it rained and I had to stay inside all day, mostly in the service area. Went home at 5 with my first ever migraine. Called in sick on Friday and called in to quit on Monday.
September 23, 20188 yr Prior to my senior year of college, I lost my baseball scholarship, and had to get a job to help out with the cost of school. I put in a bunch of applications, but the job I really wanted was at a sporting goods store. They weren't hiring at the time, and I ended up taking a job with RPS (Roadway Package Systems), unloading trucks, on the 3rd shift. After working a few days, the sporting goods store called and ended up hiring me, but I wouldn't be starting the job for a few weeks. I decided I would just work at RPS for the few weeks until my sporting goods job started. I absolutely hated working third shift, but I figured I could deal with it. I did really well at RPS, and broke productivity records 3 or 4 times during my first two weeks, but again, just hated the job. One Friday, my roommates decided to have a party, and were giving me a lot of grief over the fact that I had to work. I had to be at work by 1AM, and by 11pm, the party was really in full swing. I decide to have one beer, which turned into a bunch of beers, and I decided I was just going to call out. I called my boss, and he told me I couldn't call out. We went back and forth, and drunk me ended up telling my boss, that if I couldn't call out, then I'll just quit, at which point I was told I couldn't quit either. We argued over the phone for at least a 1/2 hour, and eventually I just hung up. Then my boss spent the next few hours calling me. Saturday and Sunday were off days, but Monday, he went right back to calling me. He must have left me 100 threatening messages over the next week, telling me I had to come in or else. I never walked back in that place again, even to get my last paycheck, which did get mailed to me. I was completely wrong for calling out, and quitting like I did, but that boss basically turned into a stalker. I ended up working for the sporting goods company for 8 years, ending up as a Regional Loss Prevention Manager.
September 23, 20188 yr During the summer I used to work at Highland County Club, mowing grass and landscaping and whatnot. I used to ride the National cutting the roughs around the tee boxes and the greens. I eventually worked my way up to being allowed to cut the greens and tees. One day I was cutting the greens and made my way to the back nine when my mower sprung a hydraulic leak. It leaked just a small bit and the oil that dripped on the greens just looked likea clump of grass clippings from the green would. By the time i had caught onto it, I had cut 4 greens. I went back to the shop to notify the mechanic. When I was talking to him about the leak the greenskeeper overheard. He promptly ordered me on a golf cart to show him the greens that had been mowed. When we got there, he flipped out. Cusing and carrying on, yelling like a crazed drunk at me. I told him that we had a good crew, and that we'd be able to handle this. He continued on screaming obscenities. I told him if he kept on like that, that I didn't think I could work for somebody like that and that my two other cousins would quit with me as well as two other friends too. That didn't seem to sink in to him, so right there on the #13 green at Highland Country Club I quit. And once I told my cousins and friends what went down, they quit too. The next week I was working at a landscaping company, cutting grass and making more money.
September 25, 20188 yr I once left my bagger job at Kroger to watch a regional tournament game while on the clock. I'm not sure why but they didn't fire me, I later on quit but they were very goid to 16 year old kid who could careless about working at that point in my life.
September 25, 20188 yr A guy who played on our high school baseball team quit after the first game of the year. He didn't start, although he definitely should have, so the coach pinch hits him in the bottom of the 7th inning in a tie game and he hits a walk off home run. He rounds the bases, tells the coach he's done and quits the team, although he did come back out the next year and was a starter.
September 27, 20188 yr I worked with the Louisville Bulls Semi-Pro football team for 19 years. We played in a summer/fall league where games would start in June and playoff began in October. Some of our guys would play spring flag football to stay in shape and every year we would get a flag football superstar come out and try tackle. They would often hang in there right up until the full pads came out. In the late 90’s we were practicing at Manual High and there wasn’t a restroom available so guys would hit the bushes for #1 or drive across the street to TacoBell for #2. It was the first day of full pads, and one really cocky flag guy had been running his mouth about how he was gonna show up everyone and be our best player etc. he catches a nice pass and gets flattened by our safety a 6-1 220 lb beast who played at Ball State. He got up but went off the field.. told some one he had to run across to TacoBell to the restroom. He never came back. For years anyone quitting got called a “Run for the Border”
