South Warren (5-0) hung a running clock on previously unbeaten Grayson County in Week 4. The Spartans will try to show the Rocky Mountain Lobos some good old fashioned southern hospitality. The Lobos (1-3) will make the nearly 1,200 mile (17 hour) trek from Fort Collins, Colorado. This game replaced the Barren County game on SW's schedule after Barren County bought their way out.

So, why exactly did this team opt to do this?

I don't think this team realized what they got themselves into.

This is interesting. First is the team from Colorado really driving for this game? And do high schools buy games out? Didn’t realize there were contracts for high school games that you would have to pay to get out of. I think South Warren wins big.

There are definitely contracts between teams in high school. It's like a college contract (for the most part), except the dollar amounts are just a wee bit smaller.

Reportedly, Barren County did the same thing with Bowling Green as well.

 

I have no idea how/when Rocky Mountain is making the trip in for this game. I'd be interested to know how this game came to be in the first place. It's not like RM is some kind of powerhouse. And there are a lot of great programs between Bowling Green and northern Colorado that surely would have made more practical sense. Is there a connection between the schools?

Basically Barren County paid the buyout of $3,000 to each District opponent to buy the game out so they could schedule a more comparable opponent. Thus forfeiting any playoff possibilities. It's the first time I've ever seen a school buyout an entire District schedule. I have seen teams buyout one game.

 

I've tried to find out some info on this Colorado team, but it's been difficult. The Denver Post wasn't much help and their high school website is terrible from I can tell.

 

But they are in Class 5A which is Colorado's highest class and they appear to be a public school from what I can tell. The RPI ranking on their CHSAA Site has them at 39. I have no idea what that means.

 

I think I saw something that in Colorado the teams have to play a certain amount of teams to be eligible for the playoffs and this team was stuck missing a game. I think there is a website where teams from across the country can post openings to try to get an opponent. South Warren I guess is giving them the $3,000 from the Barren County buyout and maybe a little bit of the gate. Not sure. It's a dang long trip that's for sure.

People complaining about the travel times to the far ends of the state for sure have an argument for this game.

According to calpreps, Rocky Mountain is ranked #6924 nationally. For sake of comparison, McLean County is ranked #6980. Rocky Mountain is ranked 31st out of 40 teams in Colorado Class 5A. South Warren is ranked #757 nationally.

So, the question then becomes, why travel across the country, for a game that could very well be a running clock before halftime?

No matter how you slice it, somebody from Colorado has deep pockets. Complete waste of $$.

 

Running Clock

It's my understanding Barren Co. only bought out South Warren and Bowling Green. They opted to keep Greenwood and Grayson Co. on their schedule.

Basically from my understanding when Barren County dropped South and Bowling Green from their schedule and brought out the contracts it left both South and BG with only 9 games.

 

Most of the schedules in Kentucky were already set. Thus the two teams BG and South were stuck with trying to find opponents who would play them this year. South posted their opening on the a national web site and the only taker was Rocky Mountain High from Fort Collins CO. South is paying them some amount to make the trip to BG. They are scheduled to be here Thursday. In addition South had to give them enrollment numbers for them to factor in their RPI for Colorado. Whatever that means.

 

That’s my understanding of how. This game came about.

 

For predictions I have no idea what they have but I expect a running clock midway in the 2nd quarter for South.

Ouch.

 

So, the question then becomes, why travel across the country, for a game that could very well be a running clock before halftime?

 

For the travel experience? I'm guessing few if any of their players have been to Kentucky. Here's hoping they stay a couple days, visit some tourist sites, and play the game.
