The Colonels are coming in off a big 40-7 win over 6A Ryle last Friday, and have showed that they're doing just fine after graduating a class of big-time players in 2017. Henry Clay is coming in off a commanding 50-22 win over crosstown rival 6A Tates Creek, showing that the Blue Devils have really turned around after last season when they were on the losing side of a 48-0 shutout at the hands of Tates Creek.

Henry Clay's QB VanHorn was 7-10 for 249 yards and 4 TDs..so he averaged over 35 yards per completed pass. That mean's the Blue Devils either have a VERY potent passing game, or the Tates Creek secondary was less than stellar. They also had one special teams TD and two defensive TDs, with a returned punt and two interceptions returned for TDs. I'm not sure what offensive look they played out of, but they only put together 81 total yards on the ground.

 

Henry Clay's D did have 3 interceptions in the game, which will be well worth being mindful of for Cov Cath, with a sophomore starting at quarterback.

The Colonels didn't skip a beat from their amazing 2017 campaign and left no doubts as to why they are once again the favorites to win the 5A championship. The 40-7 defeat of 6A Ryle marked the 13th consecutive running clock the Colonels have put on Kentucky foes. Can the Colonels continue their domination of 6A schools this week or will Henry Clay start the season 2-0 after beating Tates Creek 50-22 last week?

Henry Clay isn't great. I think their competition in Tates Creek sounds pretty suspect. Counting out PATs, HC only ran 22 plays from scrimmage if I'm reading the stats correctly (10 passing plays and 12 running plays). So if they had 330 yards of offense on 22 plays, that means Tates Creek was giving up yardage by double digits each play, on average. That's just not going to happen with CCH's defense.

 

This has the definite potential to be another running clock for CCH.

I think CovCath wins this game easily but I am looking forward to learning about this Henry Clay team. Ramond Jackson and Langston Jackson make a lethal combo. They combined for 6 TDs against Tates Creek and while I understand that Tates Creek’s defense pales in comparison to CovCath’s defense I do think if Henry Clay is able to score it will be the Jacksons that do the scoring. I like this matchup for both teams.

 

If Henry Clay expects to compete with Scott County and Freddy D then they have to have a good showing in this game.

I expect CovCath to roll big in this one.

Henry Clay has a very good kicker, some big guys up front, and a lot of speed in the skills position. Could be a closer game than some are predicting.
