Donate Blood - Kicked Off the Team

If the coach had a loved one in need of blood or bone marrow, I bet he would've had a heart.

As I told someone else, I have no problem with the kids suffering consequences if they missed practice. Sometimes in life, you have to make a hard decision and the kids have to learn that even if they think they are right, there are still rules to follow. If this coach sat them down/demoted them/ made them earn their way back, that's fine. I would not choose that as a coach but to each his own. Kicking them off the teach shows that the coach is a meathead and has no interest in teaching his kids about life.

I totally agree. Sometimes we have to make tough decisions and sometimes no matter which choice we make someone loses. It is okay for these kids to have to make a hard decision, but this coach sent a message to his kids that football is more important than helping save a human life. "Meathead" is a kind word for him IMO.

The follow up report of this instance was that all player had been reinstated and the coach apologized for what had happened. As with many things, we cant always believe what we hear/read by the media. I have a feeling there was much more to this than we know.

Painter - that was all covered in the original link. So what "much more to this than we know" is there?

I can see making them run, maybe even taking away their starting job for a game, but the seniors are still not being allowed to play in their next game this Friday night. They have three games left in their HS career. This guy is a nut. There is no more to the story in my opinion.

That was mere speculation on my part, 81...perhaps its a jaded opinion, but I have learned that reporters oft times put certain spins on a story to skew it in a direction other than the facts of the matter. I didnt mean to imply I had bonifide information...excuse the misunderstanding.

:cool:These kids can donate blood anytime..it didn't have to be at a school drive and for that matter, they could do it AFTER the season ended.

It is better that they did it on a Monday instead of a Thursday or Friday.

Nothing wrong with the coach enforcing his no practice/no play policy..but kicking them off the team was too extreme. Glad to see all is well, now.

I've asked kids not to donate blood during the day because of after-school practice and traveling school functions.

Donating blood wasn't an emergency procedure to be completed immediately.

Several students view it as an easy way to get out of class and hang out in the gym eating food and hanging out with girls for a while. :sssh:

We were not allowed to donate blood in high school because we would miss practice, some players used to get in big trouble for it. Sometimes it makes you wonder what is more important...

Exactly!!!!!!!

"He overreacted. He wasn't using the thought process that he tries to teach his kids and thinking things through. It never was about giving blood. It was about coming to practice a little bit late," said Brian Zemlick, the Willis Independent School District superintendent.

For all of you posting about them missing practice, they showed up for practice and were told that they are off the team and the careers at that school were over.

Even after the coach apologized, he still gave them punishment for missing practice (that he wouldn't allow them to come to) and they lost their starting positions. They are also not being allowed to play on Friday.

The only one who should be suspended on Friday is the coach.

Finally someone got it right, It took a while, but this is exactly the spin I have on the situation. Nothing in the article says they were told not to give blood and just maybe all they were thinking about at that given time was helping someone in need. This coach needs to get a grip on reality, I don't think by them giving blood on Monday would effect the game on Friday or their ability's. And to punish a player for missing practice when you send them home, Sorry coach it doesn't work that way. As a Father of three I would much rather my kids follow in these kids foot steps, than the coach.

What is the age for donating blood? Don't you have to be 16/17 or older?

A reasonable coach would simply have held the players out of drills that evening. That's ALL.

We're not talking about a bunch of 8-9 yr. old players. So even with the coach's strict "miss a practice, miss the game" policy, it would be pretty obvious to the team members this was a special situation and worthy of an exception.

I believe the rule is either 18 or have a paper signed with parent's permission.

There has got to be more to this story. If not, the coach should be the one kicked off the team. Even if they missed the whole practice it's still a little harsh to kick them off the team.
