What did the recent KY Teacher Pension Protest in Frankfort accomplish?

Featured Replies

The education for my kids was not cheap. I sent them to private schools. Worth the money. This citizen would like to see a balanced budget.

And the education my 3 kids received through the public school system was excellent and worth every penny as well. Public school education is often not a possibility for many families for many reasons. Location, transportation, finances, etc. Cutting funding to public schools and making it more difficult to attract teachers into the profession will have a severe impact on public schools ability to educate those who do not wish to or unable to send their kids to private school.

So spending money on education is a good thing?

We have to remember we are going to pay for people at some point either we are going to invest in their education, or we are going to pay for their incarceration.

This. Little man is only 16 months and we've already started budgeting for his (and any future siblings) school tuition. Worth every last penny IMO.

Beechwood teachers passed out these flyers this morning. I thought it was a nice informational piece to share.

Glad to hear the public schools worked out well for your kids. You can thank me for the contribution. The teachers at the private schools my kids went to make far less than the public school teachers with similar rank and their post work benefits are terrible in comparison. Maybe for some its not all about the money?

Thanks for sharing. That was a good idea by Beechwood.

With the way things have been conducted, many are confused with what is happening with these bills.

I’m well aware of the difference in pay and retirement for private school teachers. My wife taught in a private school for a half decade, and continued to sub for the Diocese of Covington for almost 10 more years. And my daughter will be entering the teaching profession after her graduation in May. I can assure you, it’s not about the money for most.

As far as your contribution, thanks. As they say, it takes a village. Regardless of whether you choose public or private.

No one is in education for the money. Many that are in the private schools available to KY families are there due to religious reasons or educational freedom/support that is available in private schools. There is a large appeal for a teacher to work in an environment where the school can refuse students or remove the student.

If no one is in it for the money, then why the issue with the Pension changes?

People don’t chose teaching for the money. And I’d say that’s true for many professions, especially those on the social services side. People will work in areas and fields that they enjoy and are satisfying to them. But people aren’t going to do it for free either.

I would love to see the budgets for private schools versus public schools. I’m thinking private schools do it for a lot less than the public school does. Not to mention those state of the art schools and facilities that are publicly funded versus private funding.

So, you DO think someone goes into teaching for the money? Ever met someone like that?

They aren't doing it for free, and no one expects them to.

But, why is it so hard for people to just admit, yeah, it (at least in part) IS about the money?

Some do, some don't. To say no one does it for the money, all the while complaining about the money, seems contradictory to me. There's nothing wrong with admitting that yeah, it is (at least partially) about the money.

I know a couple people that got into teaching simply to collect a paycheck.

I have several friends that left the private schools for the bigger dollars in the public schools and several that teach on Ohio versus Ky because they pay more.
