Does it really matter how many he scored? NOPE

Great game, venue, and atmosphere. GC fans were very well represented. Can I just say I really enjoy watching GC teams. Jones gets the most out of his teams yr in and yr out. A small school like GC in a factory town isn't overflowing with athletes but man do they get the most out of their teams. Poised, don't panic, play hard and hustle, aggressive, and they made their free throws down the stretch. I always find myself pulling for them no matter how neutral I am. They've got some underclassmen that can really play and shoot and with the development GC kids have from yr to yr, watch out. Could be special next yr too.

And what can u say about the freshman, Niece from SK. Awesome game and will be a must-see player for the next 3 yrs. @ this point of the season there are no more freshman so I feel like 30+ pt games will become the norm for him.

Would love to see a coaching finals matchup between AC and GC. I feel like it will be a OC- SO championship battle though. But I'll be pulling for the underdogs (or should I say Cats).

My apologies for not updating often in the update thread. I cover the games for the Gallatin County News and was busy writing.

Great job by Jon Jones led Gallatin. If I had to guess, SK talent>GC talent. Game won on the sidelines.

Anybody have any commentary on the game besides Coach Jones doing a good job? What strategies did he employ for the win? Was SK in foul trouble etc.?

 

Saw this score this morning and was bewildered. SK in region now for something like 15 years and still hasn't won a region. So much for the easier path to Sweet 16 after getting moved to the 8th.

I wasn't there but from my 20+ years in the area, I knew that it was won on the sideline. This was either going to be a game where SK's talent just took over or GC's game strategy won it for them. SK doesn't make very good adjustments and seem to lack the capacity to win in big games.

Jon does not let his guys panic. They are also not intimidated. His bigs did get a bit frustrated with Kelch's size and ended up with 3 seperate players trying to cover him, but his size was an issue. Jon has said that Coomer is probably the best pure shooter he has coached. That is saying a lot, given his tenure and some of the teams he has had.

 

This has developed into a nice rivalry over time. Gallatin defeated SK in the 2012 region also.

Shift really happened in the 3rd with 3 SK starters had 3 fouls each. That is with GC took the most advantage and gained a lead. 3 starts in foul trouble and without Robinson. GC took full advantage.

My two cents as to difference in game

 

GC kept playing and never changed who they are no matter what the score was. Ball moves and every player is a threat Defensively they really focused on sk offensive sets and jumped the passes multiple times. Sk offensively and defensively very predictable

 

SK offensively is very predictable. They tend to focus on being carried by one player. The vast majority of their offensive sets were trying to get the ball to neice off low curls and back screens. I didn’t see the majority of the rest of the team offensively involved unless they created on their own. Big kid was not utilized on offense. Defensively sk didn’t change after GC found things that were working. As good offensively as the freshmen was, I thought GC took advantage of him on the defensive side multiple times. Sk presses late and was effective but should have been pressing much earlier in my opinion Almost made a game of it at the end but GC was able to hang on for the win

In my opinion SK will never get to the regional finals until a change is made on who is on the sideline. SK has had several teams with lots of talent over the years, but the coaching always lets them down when the lights started shining brighter.

One of the worst things to be in high school bball is a "big guy": unless you simply just buy in to playing defense and rebounding. The high school game (in Kentucky) in essence eliminates the effectiveness of the big guy by spreading the floor with scorers and shooters. What happens is fans of yester year continually complain about getting the ball inside and the coach has to constantly answer questions as to why he isn't using the "big guy". It starts to erode at the team, and chemistry and cohesiveness is shook. The "big guy" on the offensive end is a dinosaur in Kentucky high school ball. Big Z and Big Jake as well from Cov Cath fall into this category.

Well said!! Give me a team of athletic shooters and defenders and I don't care about size.

I think this is only true if the Big Guy is not good. On teams where the post player is ineffective, but the coach believes he has to have a Center, then you are spot on. But a good balance of quickness and size is the ideal situation if the post player is good.

I just don't think high school coaches in Ky know how or want to use the big guy on the offensive end. Most of our teams don't go from inside out. Teams still need size but it's more so on the defensive end with contesting shots and rebounding. Very few use the big guy as the first offensive option.....you can see that at the college and pro level also. Couple that with the officiating makes post play and the big guy on offense irrelevant when it comes to scoring.
