December 18, 20178 yr Apparently a safety feature that will automatically slow down the train was not activated on the rail. Well, as tragic as this all is. It sounds like a lot of folks are about to get paid.
December 18, 20178 yr Author Apparently a safety feature that will automatically slow down the train was not activated on the rail. Doesnt have to be active on trains till Dec 2018 is what CNN said earlier.
December 19, 20178 yr Train was going 81.2 MPH moments before crash, speed limit was 79 according to reporter on TV. Not sure that is enough of a difference to have any bearing on the accident. Story I just read this morning, said train was going 80...but, speed limit was 30. NTSB: Train was traveling twice the speed limit before derailment
December 19, 20178 yr Story I just read this morning, said train was going 80...but, speed limit was 30. NTSB: Train was traveling twice the speed limit before derailment Yeah that's going to be hard for the engineer to explain. I'm sure they were well aware that curve coming up had a 30 mph limit.

December 19, 20178 yr Story I just read this morning, said train was going 80...but, speed limit was 30. NTSB: Train was traveling twice the speed limit before derailment I just heard that too.
December 19, 20178 yr Local Mayor pretty much predicted this a few weeks ago. He said it was almost certain there would be an accident. He seemed to be talking about crossing accidents, not derailments. And 80 mph track is not "high speed rail".
December 19, 20178 yr Story I just read this morning, said train was going 80...but, speed limit was 30. NTSB: Train was traveling twice the speed limit before derailment As soon as I saw the picture of the accident and that pretty sharp turn in the frame, I knew there was no way the speed limit was 80 through there.
December 19, 20178 yr He seemed to be talking about crossing accidents, not derailments. And 80 mph track is not "high speed rail". When I posted that they hadn't clarified what he said yet. Who called it "High Speed Rail?" If something wasn't put there to cause this derailment, then there seems to be many levels of incompetence at work here.

It's unfortunate no matter what caused this, but it's looking more and more like incompetence rather than something being on the tracks. 80 mph is way to fast for that train to be able to make that curve.

The crew blew a speed restriction, simple as that.
