Amtrak derailment in Washington

Featured Replies

Dozens dead, hundreds injured. Was a new route and this was the first pass on it. Multiple cars derailed.

Heard about this on the news. There had to be test runs on the new route, right? Thoughts to all those affected.

Keep repeating that the train hit a truck on the tracks.

Tragic.

Surely they had run trains on the line prior, right?

A few of the train cars crushed passenger cars traveling on the interstate below.

Local Mayor pretty much predicted this a few weeks ago. He said it was almost certain there would be an accident.

Reports keep coming out that the train struck something on the tracks, most are saying it was a truck.

Accident or was the train there intentionally? That is my first thought.

I think the train was supposed to be there.

My thoughts as well. The mayor seemed to be concerned about the train moving through the city at a high rate of speed, however from the video from the news choppers the train didn't seem to be in an area that would have many railroad crossings, if any. That said, you would think that the news choppers would have seen the truck while in the air, if in fact there was one hit by the train.

Per WYFF News 4 Seattle: There are 6 deaths and 70 injuries.

I meant truck but I'm pretty sure you knew that.

Train was going 81.2 MPH moments before crash, speed limit was 79 according to reporter on TV. Not sure that is enough of a difference to have any bearing on the accident.

I heard that as well and I don't think that speed difference would cause the train to derail. What I have seen from the overhead videos though is a curve that looks like it should have a much lower speed limit than 79 mph. Looks like a pretty sharp turn.

Hearing on the radio just now that there had been some past threats to the rail line and that it seems like something was definitely on the track.

It will be interesting to see where this goes.
