Well done. On the day bitcoin dropped, 97 of the top 100 coins dropped in value. I believe Ripple was one of the 3 coins that didn't drop.

Question - why do you like Ripple? Were you just timing the hot buy or is there something Ripple has that actually makes it a better product than other coins for the long haul?

I think it’s the most sustainable long-term. It’s already in use by large financial institutions. The crypto currency part of this may fade and the value may drop the block chain technology isn’t going anywhere. Ripple, to me has the most staying power due to its adoption already .

https://www.cnbc.com/2017/12/19/yapian-youbit-exchange-files-bankruptcy.html?__source=facebook-pd-crypto-link&kwp_0=642990

Excerpt:

Yapian, a company that owns the Youbit exchange in South Korea, filed for bankruptcy Tuesday after a hack that resulted in the loss of 17 percent of its cryptocurrency, according to a statement on its website.

(News of the hack was first reported by The Wall Street Journal.)

The exchange was used to purchase and sell cryptocurrencies including bitcoin and ethereum.

A translated statement posted by the company on its website said customers will be able to withdraw 75 percent of assets held there until the bankruptcy process is complete.

Ripple is up to 2.21 today btw...:dancingpa

You speak computer way better than I. What do you know about “scaling?” Ethereum has been battling the issue this year. What exactly is the “scaling” issue?

Bitcoin has been plunging for 3-4 weeks.

Apparently, the lunar new year in China is a big part of this. However, the last 3 years the dip happened b/n Jan 5 and Jan 7 (which happened this year) BUT it also went steadily back up afterwards until it just exploded last year. Maybe the explosion and increase in crypto led people to look at other coins b/c Bitcoin is too high to buy back into?

As for outside of the normal traders, who really knows what is causing the fluctuation. This stuff is so new that I can't help but think that many headlines are thrown out to scare people into selling, or pumping up people to buy. Most of the websites own a whole bunch of coins in a select few companies that seem to move the dial, so to speak. With that knowledge it is really hard to know who is speaking the truth.

The latest hack won't help, especially with it being shown that they used the minimum security that they could have. We will see. I'm holding on b/c I believe that eventually the store of value position will make way for utility. We will see, I guess.

Interested in how everyone is feeling about bitcoin nowadays. Sad, regretful, still optimistic, etc. ...

Recently, it has taken onslaughts from governments, big banks (credit cards), brokerage houses and other traditional institutions opposed to it. Bitcoin seems for now to have stabilized in the low $8,000 range. My gut feeling is that, despite all the buffeting it has received, there is just too much interest and support for it around the world from the "smaller" people for it to go under. I think and hope it will start a climb back. We'll see, I guess.

As I've said before, I would not suggest putting an IRA in Bitcoin.

Put me in the still optimistic crowd. I bought in at a low enough price that I've still turned a nice profit. Once it hit the 15k mark I went ahead and pulled out all of the money I had initially invested in it and then when it rose to near 20k I pulled out a nice chunk of profit as well. So I'm sitting in pretty good shape with nothing to lose so to speak.

Since then I have moved a lot of my BTC into Etherium because it seemed to be the most stable at the time. I've actually turned a small profit from it as well. The markets have seemingly stabilized for the time being and are starting to show a bullish trend going forward. I don't expect to see the massive gains that we were seeing in Oct/Nov but I also don't expect to see massive drops in the near future either. Of course unless there is a massive rise with a correction to follow.

I pulled out my initial investment as well but still have a very sizable amount invested that is pure profit that I making a small amount of money on. Very optimistic and holding what I have in there for sure.
