4 classes (or whatever number you want ) wouldnt fix it. Saying there’s too many classes is a lazy answer to a problem that doesn’t have a solution.

 

Look at the travel of 6A District 1 and the cost of traveling from Henderson to Paducah. 1A I’m traveling from Russellville to Fulton.

I think that Beechwood-Danville could have been a great game, but the other 2 would have ended up similar to what happen already. A really close game for 24 mins, and then a blowout for the last 24.

Too many classes IMO.

 

How many is right?

 

If you go five then the male population in the 5A would range from 628 to 1377.

 

The other four are not too bad but the 6A is going to be X or T. Like now.

It was a bit closer in the last 10 years of 3 classes but only with the smaller schools.

 

A 6-2, 13-6, 14-6, 20-13, 21-13 and 30-23 3 +10 games

 

AA 19-14, 14-7 and 16-7 7 +10 games and 5 of those were +17

 

AAA 7-7 and 13-12 8 games +10 and of those 7 were +15

 

Just about every year there are going to be dominate teams and even if we went back to 3 classes better than half the finals aren't going to be nail bitters. All you can do is sit back and enjoy watching great teams perform.

Travel now is nothing compared to the days of WKC. Bowling Green's schedule included Murray, Mayfield, Paducah, Hopkinsville, Caldwell County, Owensboro. No parkways, no interstates. Nearby games were Glasgow, Russellville, Franklin-Simpson.

 

Russellville went to Fulton City and Crittenden Co this year. Fulton County forfeited rather than travel to Russellville. Fulton City and County should consolidate. makes no sense not to.

Fewer classes would likely bring a few more nice teams into each class. But it would also bring mostly average and below average teams and widen the gap between largest. You'd likely have more less competitive regular season games due to larger districts, and give the better schools less scheduling flexibility.

 

Geography is a whole other issue. Come playoff time, in a state shaped like KY with a very widespread population, geography and travel issues are going to pop up regardless.

If State Championships weren't blowouts we'd have doubts. Other than two games, most games were a toss up going into it, and maybe even an upset 4A. It was the most excited I'd been for State in a while.

My point is we are worried about blow out firat round games and we cant even have competitive state championship games.

Fulton Co and Fulton City really should consolidate because they’d still be 1A. If they was a big size difference like one was 4A and other 2A then I would say no. But together they could field a competitive team. I remember a few years back they beat Mayfield. I think that was in 2007 but lost when it mattered.
