Playoff Player Ejections

Featured Replies

The bad thing about players ejections that the KHSAA needs to educate the officials on the rules. Last year's Mayfield player # 4 was ejected for targeting and the rule clearly stated that targeting is not a ejection but a unsportsmanlike penalty and 15yards. The film was reviewed and not overturned. The film clearly showed no helmet was used in this hit. Officials watch to much TV and seem to mix rules up between NCAA and KHSAA.

I've never heard of anyone ever getting an ejection over turned...even with CLEAR video evidence presented to the KHSAA...still nothing overturned...just like this situation.

Why didn't the KHSAA end the suspension?

These two situations indicate the officials were too quick to eject.

In your opinion. Again, not to be stated as fact.

”officials watch too much TV and seem to mix the rules up” ....That’s the pot calling the kettle black! As defensive pass interference is called and everyone screams pass wasn’t catchable, as tackle is made grabbing the back of the jersey and player falls forward and it’s a horse collar tackle....yeah it’s the officials who are confused.

Again you are correct that the penalty for targeting is 15 yards HOWEVER their is also the sub section in the rule book under

Disqaulifications Associated with certain 15 yard Penalties.

” an act if unduly rough or flagrant” which a targeting call could be expanded to. Targeting a running back or receiver during a play is probably going to get 15 yards. Let’s say on a kickoff a receiving team player bypasses everyone and blows up the kicker just jogging down the field, that is targeting by rule but can also be seen as unduly rough and flagrant and therefore can be an ejection for targeting. A ball clearly sails over and beyond receiver yet defense takes 3 more steps and blows him up, that’s targeting and also flagrant he can be ejected for that play. Btw, I’ve seen both the plays I gave as examples.

And trust me the official calling the playoffs know the rules and don’t confuse the NFHS with NCAA and NFL rules.

Of course IMO. That goes without saying. The vast majority of the posts on here are IMO posts.

In this thread, I am posting information as I get it and looking for more information. Personally, I am learning a lot as this discussion goes on. e.g. atm10's post above. That is great information that I was not aware of till I read that post. The more information we get out into the public on these types of things, the better it is for everyone IMO.

We will never know. It's very sad a senior football player and the leader of his team was kicked out of a game for playing hard Every single play. We can't go back and re do that call or the season. However hopefully KHSAA and officials are educated from this bad call on the field and at the KHSAA office following this ejection. So no other young man or his team has to go through this again. Mistakes happen but it takes a bigger man to over turn and admit to those mistakes.

Looks like a lot of people who have never officiated stating what the officials should and shouldn't have done. No surprise there. Easy to do it from the sidelines.

I do understand officiating is a tough job and a thankless job. But when you have video evidence to prove otherwise after the fact and when a official actually doesn't see the play where they decide the fate of a young man we do have flaws and issues with officiating. So it will never be perfect. But as adults we need to make good decisions when we decide the fate of young men.

The problem wasn't as much the official as it was the ruling body not overturning it. But also from experience, refs can handle situations how they choose. The official could've went to coach and said take the kid out for a few plays and tell him to get it under control.

Can the kids parents from Beechwood get an injunction by a judge to let him play? I know it's been done in other cases against the KHSAA.

Yes I think you can get an injunction. But if you lose your case after the season and Beechwood goes on to win the championship this player may be ruled ineligible. So Beechwood's championship would be in jeapordy.

Has Tackett made his judgement concerning this player?

Sounds like it. Kid isn't playing.
