Covington Catholic 43 South Warren 7

No, that's some sort of an error on their side. Mark Nelson helmed them the first three seasons.

Sometimes, if a coach is hired in the spring they'll update the KHSAA link and it throws the coach into the previous season when he/she didn't actually coach the team. We had it happen at Garrard a couple of years back. I think its just a flaw/glitch in the KHSAA's scoreboard program.

Calpreps has been pretty darn accurate.

Indeed. Called it 40-8. Almost perfect.

Just getting in a from a long drive from South Warren. Random observations:

1) Coldiron (118 yards receiving and 2 tds's) is very tough match up for most high school defenses. The first two td's really put SW on their heels.

2) SW linebackers played a solid game. Really get sideline to sideline well and a lot of plays CovCath normally got 6 - 10 yards on during the season only went for 1 - 2 yards.

3) Spurrier made some nice throws that led to the 99 yard scoring drive right before half time to make the score 21 -7. A couple of untimely drops hurt the cause for SW later in the game.

4) SW got the ball first in the 2nd half and I was thinking if they could get a td, the game would have gotten very interesting.

5) Instead they go 3 and out and CovCath scores on their possession. The game may have been decided in those two drives.

6) Really enjoyed talking with the SW staff. Knowledgeable football people who knew their high school football.

Good article from the Bowling Green Daily News:

Spartans fall to No. 1 Covington Catholic

The clock struck midnight for the South Warren football team, which fell to No. 1 Covington Catholic 43-7 in the Class 5A semifinal Friday at South Warren High School – ending the team’s Cinderella postseason run.

After road wins against Christian County and Bowling Green the previous two weeks, South Warren hung around with Covington Catholic for a half before the Colonels’ high-powered offense pulled away.

The loss snapped a 36-game home winning streak for South Warren (11-3), dating back to 2012.

Shout out to the CovCath faithful tonight. Really nice turnout for a game 3 hours away.

Congrats to the Colonels bring home the hardware next week!

In thinking back about this game there were some big plays and great plays by Covington Catholic and some mistakes or failures to excite by South that really allowed this game to get lopsided.

First Covington Catholic second TD came when the ball looked to be overthrown and the receiver made a great athletic one handed catch and goes for 6. Most times that ball is dropped or no catch. He made a great play.

The fake punt on 4 and 6 near midfield. Punter goes down right sideline inside 20. Big play kept south defense on field when they thought they were coming off.

Third was the amazing flip of the ball from the qb to the back. South had great pressure and looked to be a sack. Lacey and Cross had Myer (sp) in grasp and looked to be going down when he flips the ball to the back and it goes for a first down and eventual score.

South had the ball trailing 14 -0 inside the Covington Catholic 20 around the 16 and Spurrier forced a ball to Bush on the sideline in tight coverage that was inteecepted.

South goes 99 yards before half to make it 21-7 at half. They get the ball to start 3rd. They go 3 and out and punt. But on 2nd and 3rd down Eblen for South was wide open deep and dropped both passes to put south in the 4th and 9. He catches either of those and it’s a little different game.

In the end Covington Catholic made the big plays and South did not. And of those 5 plays goes for South and the game USA little different and probably not as lopsided.

Wow, yet another impressive win Colonels!

Keep the train rolling and have fun in Lexington next week - you deserve it!

I know the score looks bad but I give South Warren credit for making Cov Cath work for everything they got. I am pretty sure that was the closest halftime score for a Kentucky team (NOTE!!! ... I said Kentucky team) against Cov Cath.

They eventually got to the running clock but it wasn't until the fourth quarter and it was 28-7 heading into the fourth quarter. Again, that was the closest any Ky. team has been to Cov Cath. Based on all that, I would say South Warren is the best Ky. team Covington Catholic has played this year and in the mix for the best team CCH has played this year.

But, at the end of the day, Covington Catholic 2017 is just too good.

I would like to add, the kid from SW going to Notre Dame is a really nice player.
