Eight boys who play high school basketball in Kentucky — five from Lexington — have been suspended for the first game of the regular season because of their participation in an organized basketball contest at an unallowed time.

 

Athletic directors from Frederick Douglass, Lafayette, Montgomery County, Scott County and South Laurel each self-reported violations under the KHSAA’s Bylaw 9, which restricts basketball and football players from participating in organized contests of those sports outside of school from the first day of school through the school’s last scheduled contest (including postseason) in those sports.

Kentucky kids can't attend camps or showcases during the school year either. Dumbest thing I've ever heard of. How does this create a competitive advantage for certain schools or harm the kid?

I agree completely. However, as Tackett said in the press release, the KHSAA enforces the rules that the schools put in place.

Right member schools make rules that benefit them.

This ruling is completely insane. Why can't we just use common sense and apply it to these various rulings instead of having one blanket policy that usually ends up hurting the players in our state?

Contact with the AAU guys after school starts is a big no no. To be honest, they got off easy with one game because of what it was.

Bylaw 9. Dumbest. Rule. EVER! I coach several high school kids over the summer and they wanted to play a couple of tournaments and in a league in late August/September (these kids don't play football, and several are basketball only). High school coaches said "heck no"! Bylaw 9. Kept these kids from competing. Kids were mad, parents were mad...just a stupid rule.

The dumbest thing about Bylaw 9 is that it only applies to football and basketball.
