October 9, 200620 yr Just throwing it out there. I think we are very athletic with a lot of young talent. The bottom line this year is they have won the games they should, lost the one's the should and lost the game that was a middle of the SEC pack. They have played Florida, Tenn etc close many times in the past. Why is it different this year. I keep reading they are much better but what have they reall done that proves that? I am a long time die hard UK football fan. I just don't see them as that much better right now. Offensively they have the potential to be VERY explosive. Defensively they are pretty bad and thin. I really don't know if UK has ever had a corner that can play. If I was the recruiting coordinator at UK I would make it very clear that you have a more than legit shot to start next year as a true Fresh!
October 9, 200620 yr They are better. With only 6 recruited seniors on the roster and only 5 getting any PT, they are a VERY young team. I like their spirit and heart and with the continued hard work combined with some more solid recruiting classes coming in the near future, I see much brighter days for UK. When you are starting so many frosh/sophs and have frosh/sophs behind them, especially on D, you are going to be thin and they are. But I have to say that while I was also very disappointed with the loss, that is the problem with young teams, ... you rarely get a full 4 quarters out of them. You can have a team with a few solid young players who are led along by the veterans. But with so few solid upperclassmen (thank you Mumme/Bassett and some minor 'kudos' to Morris for his lack of recruiting on the limited schollys he had left to give out), these young guys are learning how to play in the SEC the hard way. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel and unlike in years past, this time I don't believe that light is an oncoming train!
October 9, 200620 yr Better, yes...............Enough to make a difference this season, I dont know. They could win six games and still not go to a bowl. The SEC is only allowed 8 bowl teams and at 6 wins UK could be #9. The South Carolina game was really important.

As I understand it, the SEC has 8 Bowl ties in, but could send two teams to BCS games, meaning they could have 9 bowl teams. If UK gets to 6 - 6 with the fan base they have, I would have to think they will go to a bowl. As to the original question, I believe UK is getting better. Next year is the year for UK to show they have significantly improved. It is very hard to win in Div I football with only 6 recruited seniors on the roster.

The 2 teams to the BCS took a big hit with Auburn losing to Arkansas. The UK fan base would help, we are suckers for football:D
October 9, 200620 yr The 2 teams to the BCS took a big hit with Auburn losing to Arkansas. The UK fan base would help, we are suckers for football:D I believe you can take Auburn out of the BCS race. We still have Florida with a good chance, but there are too many good teams with too many winnable games remaining for Auburn to make it - especially since they play Florida next week. Now, if Auburn beats Florida, I don't know what to expect - possibly Tennessee if they win out, except that they happened to lose to Florida. The SEC makes my head explode...

Allow me to go on the record: if UK gets to 6 wins there is NO WAY that they won't be invited to a bowl. None. The way they travel, some bowl that has a conference tie-in that doesn't meet its allocation will beg UK to come there.

I like UT making a BCS game.

The way they travel, some bowl that has a conference tie-in that doesn't meet its allocation will beg UK to come there. I agree 100%. I have been to most of the UK bowl appearances since the early 1980's. Not many, but I was there. And I can tell you that UK had twice as many fans than Penn State at the Outback Bowl and about the same ratio at the Music City Bowl against Syracuse. UK fans travel. We have no major pro teams in our state, so college sports rule our cheering sections. UK with 6 wins will put butts in the seats at a bowl game and those $$$'s will get the attention of a bowl needing a boost in sales.
October 9, 200620 yr I see this as a strong possibility. I like UT making a BCS game. If UT's only loss is to UF and UF continues to remain in that #2 spot, then the Vols could get a BCS bid. UF, UT, UGA, USC, Auburn, Alabama, LSU, Arkansas, & UK all have good shots at getting bowl bids with UK being the darkhorse of the group. Vandy's loss to Ole Miss really hurt the Commodores chances and Ole Miss and Miss St will just be out in the cold at the end of the season the way it looks right now.
October 9, 200620 yr UK has improved this season, but imo not even close to enough to compete in the SEC. UK's defense is terrible along with the line play. We HAVE to be able to run the football before anything else can open up and go on a consistent basis and we have to stop people on defense intead of the "matador" defense that we are playing (step aside and wave at em' as they run by).I will always be a fan of UK football but this same ol' story of "it is building" gets way too old year in and year out. I would love to see them in a bowl game but I have expressed my opinions on 6 win season bowl team. I think that it is crazy to have .500 team in a Bowl. There are far too many bowls but that is all about the $$$$ and nothing else.

I agree with this statement MT but right now I still am not convince that the cats will get 6 wins, hope that they do and my opinion of a 6 win bowl team was expresssed in my previous post.
October 9, 200620 yr There are far too many bowls but that is all about the $$$$ and nothing else. If it wasn't about money, would there be any bowls at all? I'm a sucker for all things college football. Heck, I even watched UC's Humanitarian Bowl games on the blue turf of Boise State. If every bowl eligible team made a bowl what harm is there? If it is bad football (and some of it is), don't tune to the game.

There are far too many bowls but that is all about the $$$$ and nothing else. I think before we set our sights on competing in the SEC, we need to establish ourselves as a team that can consistently beat the Mississippi teams and Vandy and win the non-conference games that we should win. Then, we need to focus on beating the mid-level teams like South Carolina and Arkansas. We have to get to that point before we can start thinking about scoring an upset against one of the big boys. And, from what I've seen so far, I think we're heading in the right direction, but we still have a lot of work to do.
October 9, 200620 yr I dont think the team is a whole lot better. But they have improved some. Especially on offense. We have been fun to watch this year. The team is not having near as many 3 and outs as in the past. We are putting a better product on the field. Now, with the schedule we have, we need to win 6 games in order to say that this team has made an improvement. Last year we only won 4, but this year we have an extra cup cake on the schedule and should win 6.
