More on Matewan, WV coach's quest for a record

Featured Replies

The coach felt confused when McCoy ran onto the field to start the second half. Livid when Matewan started to run a no-huddle offense in the third quarter with a 35-point lead. Nauseous when Matewan stopped returning punts, instead letting the ball roll backward to leave more yards for McCoy

Thats something you do in week 11 in NCAA 2007 when you need a big game to get the Heisman Trophy...not in a high school game....This story made me sick to my stomach.

Trust me... there are much deeper issues that would make posters on here want to call for Kinder's head. I dont know if anyone caught the part about Kinder and Hunt teaching together? If so, it's worth noting that while teaching together at Burch, Kinder was the Matewan coach. IMO, Yogi Kinder should be banned from high school coaching and 90% of that comes not from his on the field lack of sportsmanship, but instead from what he ahs done in the classroom and in the public eye.

If they only knew......I don't know how he has gotten away with being the type of guy he is for this long.

But maybe this kind of notoriety will bring it all out.

They was other reasons than that why David Jones did move over to Ky but needless to say Kinder isnt much of a guy and honestly their Principal shes just as bad. Ive got alot of friends from there and they tell me some awful stories on him. I wouldnt want the man around a kid of mine ever.

I would say that Matewan's coach is lucky that his understudy didn't knock his teeth out after the game. I guess he decided to take the high road, but I guarantee you that he was thinking it. If not, he's a lot tougher than me and I'm a nice guy.

I think a reprimand of some sort is in order. Kinder needs to be punished. Unfortunatley, I'm not sure there is anyone home at the Mingo Co. BOE.

I think what I would have done is have my team shake the hands of the Matewan players only but not the coaches.

Disagree Watusi

I agree the blame goes to Kinder, but teenage kids aren't oblivious. It is a lot to ask a 17 yr old boy to be the bigger man than his 40 yr old coach, so I don't think this should be a thread bashing the team. That said, when something stinks, even a 5 yr old can smell it!

Nearly impossible. No kid on that team could be expected to stand up to their coach or maybe even recognize the injustice during the moment. Kids are influenced easily by people they look up to, and no doubt, a lot of them didn't see the wrong in what they were doing until somebody with morals explained it to them, if at all.

Of course, I said what I would have done with the benefit of a weeks worth of reflection. If faced with that situation, being on the losing end like that, I may have very well opted to walk away.

"All these records aren't being broken in state championship games," Kinder said. "You get numbers like that against sorry teams."....that is an absolutely, no-class horrible statement to make, from a coach in a public forum.

Hunt knew Kinder well, since both men have taught classes at Burch recently, and he'd always regarded his rival coach as something of a local legend.

"He is a guy I always respected," Hunt said. "I never thought he would make me feel like this."....sometimes getting caught up in the glory and achieving records, reveals the true character in someone....or in this case, the lack of.

I agree what Matewan did was despicable but I take issue with you comparing it to anything Trinity has done. Please tell me any time that Trinity has used a no-huddle offense with a big lead, let punts go to allow for more offensive yardage or kept their startes in the game when it was out of hand. Please provide specific details of the game you are referring to.

Also please note that it wasn't a Trinity person who turned this into a Trinity thread:thumb: :D

My comparison probably wasn't that good, I was just angry at the article and those classless acts popped in my head while reading it and I used them. However, they don't compare to it after I went back through the article. Sorry if I upset anyone

I think I would have told my team to down the kickoffs at at the 10-yard line or so. Then take a knee three straight times to the 3-4 yard line, go for it on 4th down, and kneel at the 4. If Matewan decided to on-side kick, it would look even worse on their part. Then I would have the quarterback roll out and lose about 20 more yards. Just make it nearly impossible for him to get big chunks of yardage.

That's making the game a mockery just as much as the other coach.

I disagree. I think it proves a point. While I agree with what they did afterward, some will see what Burch did in not shaking hands as unsportsmanlike as well.

Once the game is out of hand (as it was early in this one), the gameplan and objectives of coaches change, such as working on different plays, playing backups, etc.

In this blowout, the objectives now change to doing what it takes to keep an unsportsmanlike opponent from making a mockery of you, your team, and your school.

We can all say what we would do in a situation like this if you were the opposing coach now that it is a week later and we have time to think about it. I think the opposing coach did exactly what he should do. Play football to the best of his teams ability. Let the other coach look like the idiot. This is a sad situation for everyone involved. No one was a winner here. Every kid on both teams lost because adults were not utilizing thier brains. I have no idea who this coach is but I'm sure he is not sleeping well at night right now.

I see this situation was on the channel 3 news tonight.

Don't count on it. I have heard or read several comment he has made since justifying his actions. I don't think he is remorseful.

In this particular game, I would've played my team just like usual for the first half. At halftime, I would've told the starters to take it easy and I would've played my JV/freshman team the rest of the way. Now, if the younger guys step up and score 50 points or rush for 300 yards, that's a different story. What you don't ever do is leave your starters in and do stupid crap like lose yards on purpose so your superstar can gain more yards.
