Was he the best available?

He's the best in the business outside of his dad... ;)

It'll be interesting to see who the 3rd in the booth is -- I just can't imagine Brantley working with Marty and Thom. However, as ex-players go, maybe Mercker makes good sense.

I wonder how many more years Marty plans on doing this, because this smells like setting up succession to me.

It sounds like he'll do about 90 games next season...

I'm not sure I could stand Brantley. Although not having to look at his 'made for radio face' would be a plus.

Thom Brennaman, 43, is expected to broadcast approximately 90 games for the Reds while continuing to serve as one of Major League Baseball's lead announcers on the Saturday Game of the Week for Fox television. The Reds will hire another broadcaster to work games in his absence.

The Cincinnati native will work alongside his father, Marty Brennaman, for selected radio broadcasts on WLW-AM 700 and also will sit in the booth for Reds TV broadcasts on FSN Ohio.

Hopefully for Reds fans (and I think it will be the case), they will be more exciting than the Carey father-son tandem in Atlanta.

I want Johnny Bench (never happen though)

That is a twist I hadn't heard previously. I wonder if they will also rotate / experiment with a 3-man booth as well?
