Chiropractic Therapy---Good Medicine or Just Quackery???

Featured Replies

Had back issues and went to one. He would get me feeling pretty good and than I'd go back to square one. He actually told me to try a different guy. It was more muscular In my opinion. I've had some upper back now and would be willing to try one again.

I have been a few times and did get very short term relief 2-3 days worth. The first time he adjusted (cracked) my neck, I thought he had broken it and I would be paralyzed for life.

It did not help my problem long term or overall. The overall outcome of no more back pain or long relief is not something I experienced.

My father in law swears by them from his walker due to back pain.

That is what freaks me out about the whole thing.

Mr. Cat and I have been doing a cross fit workout 3 days a week for the last 2 months now. The pains that I used to have in my back and neck are totally gone. Maybe your body is telling you it's time to start some type of work out program?

37 years of him treating you and you still need him?

I have a couple of spots that flare up occasionally, and he takes care of it. One started when I was 21.

Had a few of us chatting about aches and pains a while ago caused by our workouts. Someone pointed to a heavy set buddy sitting at the bar eating chicken wings and drinking beer and mentioned we never hear him complain.

Okay then.... maybe I need to think this through some more. :wideyed:

You mentioned your "osteopath", so I assume you're already seeing an osteopathic doctor. Why did he or she not perform OMT on you? Or if they don't do OMT in their particular practice he/she should certainly be able to recommend another osteopathic doc that does. I am quite biased, but I will always recommend an osteopathic doctor over a chiropractor for both safety and efficacy.

I recommend you see an orthopaedic specialist/surgeon first. Once the ortho reviews the diagnostic testing (and perhaps orders additional imaging), you can ask the ortho what he/she recommends. It's possible they'll recommend physical therapy or chiropractic treatment.

Chiropractic treatment can be very beneficial, but typically it only offers short-term relief if you have a significant issue. It may help on a day to day basis, but it won't "fix" the problem like physical therapy (or surgery) can.

This.

And remember if something does go "wrong" there is not anything a chiro can do for you. So maybe start at a specialist first and if sound then try massage therapy and physical therapy before going to a chiro

Physical therapy was mentioned, and I would be attracted to that idea if presented with your similar problem.

Years ago I tore something in my knee, and went weeks hoping that the pain would miraculously go away. It didn't... so I went to an ortho who prescribed 6 weeks of PT 3 times a week, and though going in I had my doubts, the results made a believer of me.

One thing in particular that stuck with me was the benefits of thera-band exercises.

Presently I have no body aches to speak of, and aside from routine power walks, I attribute this to 3 things that I do every morning when I wake.

1. Before getting out of bed I reach for a thera-band that I have on my headboard and place it firstly around my left foot and then do 5 reps of a fully extended leg lift, then on same leg 5 reps of pushing my leg fully forward, then place band on both feet, repeating same exercises with band on both feet, then place band on right foot and do just as I did with band on left foot, so in total I do 30 stretches every morning before getting out of bed.

2. I rise from bed, and the while standing straight with arms in the air, I reach for the ceiling and give a good hearty stretch, then proceed to make my bed.

3. I go to kitchen to begin sorting my prescriptions meds and supplements for the day, start the coffee, and power up my computer, and check my blood sugar...

...between each and everyone of these small tasks I take two 8 pound dumb bells and do 4 x 20 reps lifting directly upward to the ceiling just as I did with my initial stretch, which basically strengthens my shoulders and lower back.

I never increase the weight as this is only meant to be a wake me up stretching routine to keep the neck, shoulders, and back feeling loose, limber, and strong, and along with the thera-band exercises, also to get the rickets out of my legs as well.

None of this is time consuming, or even difficult, yet it makes a world of difference in getting my body feeling loose and limber within the first 15-20 minutes of waking.

Obviously for your particular situation if you go the PT route, they can pinpoint proper exercises to get you back and track, and maybe suggest routine ones to keep you there.

I've pretty much made up my routine, but I swear by it to prep my muscles for the day before I set out to use them for anything.

My dad was a Chiropractor, back when it was considered quackery. My brother is also a chiropractor, and it is much more acceptable now. He even gets referrals from MD's these days and insurance companies cover his clients as well.

IMO, there is definitely a place for Chiropractics. The older you get, the more likely you are to get neck and back problems, sometimes without doing anything. An adjustment to put things back in alignment is a wonderful thing.

Obviously, if you are in some kind of accident, a neurosurgeon should be your first approach. But for neck and back pain related to every day activities, there is nothing better. A good Chiropractor will know if he/she is out of his element and will make the proper referrals to a neurosurgeon.

My brother has literally saved my neck on multiple occasions. It usually takes him 1-3 visits to get things back in shape. I would definitely see him before a neurosurgeon a million times over.

I must admit, the neck cracking still bothers me, but I always feel better after.

SF, if you live in NKY, I would be happy to refer you. Dont be afraid!

I'm 58 and have been going to the same one since I was 21. Gonna be sad when he decides to hang it up.

I wish I could tell you a retirement date, but they like going to the boat too much. So, with that in mind, I don't know. I wish he would retire sooner rather than death, but I think that latter may be it. Hope you're not his patient that day.

37 years of him treating you and you still need him?

One back fix is not permanent. Good grief.

I'm obviously biased, but I'm betting your chiro is not particularly good. If you want to try something different by an old-school chiro who doesn't seem to be interested in the way things are done these days (like charging you $100 for every visit), I might could help you. PM me.

Thank you for clearing up misconceptions about the profession. With my dad being a chiropractor, I get a little worked up about misinformation. They can't cure everything, but they can help a lot. There are a lot of aches and pains my dad can't fix in me, but those ones he can't fix are because I have already damaged things in me that are way beyond his abilities.
