Beyond that, I still think players should stand during the National Anthem. If they want to go to mid field after the Anthem and kneel and pray, I'm on board.

My dad was in the Normandy invasion. He rarely would talk about it but at times he would say a few things. If what he experienced was anything close to how the invasion scene that was depicted in the movie "Saving Private Ryan" I can see why he chose not to talk about it or remember. What those men went through to ensure that we would have the freedoms we have, the right to peacefully protest included, was horrendous.

 

To me it's like a slap in the face to those brave men at Normandy, as well as others who have fought in battles throughout America's history.

In my opinion this is the wrong choice of a platform to protest.

I’ll ask you the same thing I ask everyone who says “do something else.” What other act(s) could these people participate in that would generate the same amount of conversation that this has? Everyone says do something different, no one ever provides an alternative.

Negative reaction can be detrimental to the cause is the problem. Why don't they go to the cities where the protests are and march with them? Why not ask for media time to speak about injustices? Meet with local and national leaders and have it televised. I'm sure the media would, and should, get on board.

How about all the players who want to protest arriving 30 minutes late for the game. That would definitely stir up the masses and get tons of media exposure. And if the owners get angry or threatening tell them that you are protected under the Constitution of the US to express your political feelings. Another alternative could be to stay in the locker room until the anthem is over and then explain to the media why you did it.

These alternatives would showcase their cause to the national media without insulting and degrading the flag that thousands of Americans have fought and died for.

 

Furthermore and in my opinion, I don't think a sporting event is the place for these action. Keep politics as far away from the sports world as possible. People tune in to games to watch the games, not political shenanigans.

There's nothing I love more than being lectured on racism by a white male. Next you'll be telling me what it's like to be a woman in America!

 

I'm of the thinking that all people no matter their race can be hopeful for peaceful race relations for the betterment of all.

 

I see it to be helpful if we listen to one another so that we can try to understand and offer empathy to each other's concerns...

 

...so... I don't need to be black, for example, to try to come to an awareness and understanding of how many feel that they can be treated unfairly, or experience a raw deal when it comes to equality and justice.

 

I'd like to believe that if I can try to be an advocate for their cause perhaps other white folks too might be able to come around to a better understanding where previously they might have fallen short, or hadn't ever tried to put themselves in their shoes.

 

Similarly, I don't need to be a woman either to understand and empathize with what they for centuries have had to endure regarding the inequality of the sexes, and in various way, still do.

 

My apologies if you feel singled out and lectured to by me as I trust that you're already in sync with the points that I have expanded on within this post, and that you aim within your everyday life to offer understanding to people of all races, and try to set this example in your actions with the hopes that others too might follow in your footsteps with the mindset that you can be white, but still understand some of the concerns of people of other races that perhaps a white person might not ordinarily encounter.

I disagree about Kap, he did everything early on the wrong way. I also disagree that people don't want to hear it. Some, sure. Some people are ignorant and just don't care. Others (most IMO) that have an issue with him and others that kneel during the anthem think it's the absolute worst forum for them to choose and I tend to agree with them for all of the reasons that have been posted ad nauseam. I feel Kap and others don't want to hear their voice and simply don't care if it's offensive. That's a problem if you want to reach someone. I understand why this is a burning issue for you, I can't begin to try to walk in your shoes. I can only imagine how frustrating it is for you and I wish I had a definitive solution for you because I think you're a really good guy. I just don't see why some or all of the things I brought up couldn't at least be tried as an alternative.
