Dayton Greendevils 1966 State Champs

Featured Replies

There is a great article in the Enquirer this morning talking about the Dayton 1966 State High School Champs. Good article on who was on the team the coach and they all will be recognized at the Dayton vs Holy Cross game tonite. Wish I could be there as I saw a couple of old guys I played with the Eddie and Wilburn brothers. Great bunch of guys. Congrats to them and hope they all have a great time tonite. JD

The score in the Championship game was 6-2.....WOWZERS!!

Not the lowest state final score. Check out the 4A game in I believe 1997.

I went to school with two children of Fred Wilburn, I've heard some good stories about those Green Devils.

Its kind of neat that most of the small schools up here have a state title to hang their hat on......Dayton in 66, Ludlow mid 70's, Bellevue 79' and Beechwood most of 90's....NCC 2005...

Coming from a small rivertown myself, I can appreciate what this team went through with small class sizes, 2-3 brothers on same team, close knit group, its a special thing that the big schools sometimes cant say they experience.

Great to see the Champions of 1966 last night. It was a nice tribute.

Don't forget Lloyd in '76.

Bottom line is, it was a wonderful article about a great team. Great to see all those who returned. Congrats to the team of 66. Hope your reunion was tons of fun! :thumb:

They are recognizing the 50th anniversary of the championship season at tonight's game.

(Was googling looking for stats on the team and a link to this thread came up)

Dad making a TD catch in the semi-final 20-19 win against Pineville.

10-3 Record

Outscored opponents 308 -120

Average margin of victory: 21 (59 highest)

Average margin of defeat: 7.3

Worst loss was the season opener to Highlands 28-13. Other 2 were 2 & 5 point losses. (Highlands lost to Hopkinsville in the 2A final 27-6)

Apparently they didn't post individual stats or play by play on the internet back then.
