Known early in his career in the 60's & 70's mostly as a physical comedian actor on British TV sitcoms, Michael Crawford became wildly famous after taking the lead role in Andrew Lloyd Webber's "The Phantom of the Opera in 1986 where folks discovered that this man wasn't too shabby of a singer either.

Rick Springfield--Soap Opera actor had a hit with "Jessie's Girl".

Miley Cyrus, acting came first.

I'm assuming we're not refering to actors and actresses that sang in a movie, but rather tried a career as a muscisian.

 

ie. Joaquín Phoenix, Gweneth Paltrow, Reese Witherspoon, River Phoenix, etc could sing and sang in movies.

 

Zooey Deschanel has released several albums.

Known originally as the teen title character in Doogie Howser M.D., and then Barney Stinson on How I Met Your Mother, Neil Patrick Harris went on to win the 2014 Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical for playing the lead role on Broadway in "Hedwig and the Angry Inch".
