Democrats will regroup as soon as some realizes that the middle class, not extreme groups need to be thier focus. They talk about middle class and blue collar workers but have taken them for granted for so long, so they could cater to fringe groups on the far far left.

 

If the Democrats can find someone devoid of scandal and shady dealings in their back ground that will talk to and listen to Americans instead of talking at them, then they'll be right back in it.

That would need to happen over time.

 

Wage stagnation is huge concern also.

 

It's a separate issue and let's not assume people who would benefit from a minimum wage increase don't work hard.

 

Another one of the hypocrisies of liberal ideology. Complain about wage stagnation, but invite anyone not a citizen to participate in the labor market? Flood the nation with foreign labor, then wonder why we have wage stagnation and layoff of citizens to favor cheap foreign labor.

And let's not assume that people who worked hard to get to a point of making more than a decent living, didn't start out making that min wage too but because of working hard, getting an education in a marketable degree ,keeping their noses clean, living within their wage earning ability in the early years, didn't work hard either.

 

I understand that more than you realize but when you work hard and you finally get ahead only to be pushed back by the cost of living, it's kinda of hard to take, when others just what it now, instead of working up that ladder!

I don't think minimum wage at fast food or jobs like that is supposed to support a family of 4 or have Disney vacations, nice cars, or live a lavish lifestyle.

 

I think more of teens getting a start or someone needing extra money.

Living wage is coming but a minimum wage increase isnot it.

I don't think the party is doomed but I do think it needs to find an identity, do a much better job of messaging, formulate a fifty state strategy that it believes in , do a better job of getting its base impassioned enough to vote(key), and just be more assertive in taking it to the opposition. Democrats stand for a lot of good things, in my opinion. They need to convince people that they are the party for the majority of Americans. I hope Mr Trump survives four years and continues doing exactly what he has done for six months. Democrats should be back on top at the end of Mr. Trump's term in office. If they are they are not on top by then, then I'll agree they have very serious problems.

It was raised because of the erroneous opinion that the government could engineer a fix for "the problem." The minimum wage should never be raised by the government. Let wages be dictated by the market. Artificial raising of the cost of doing business (i.e. labor costs) will have an adverse effect on that business and most likely bring about higher unemployment. Raising labor costs will raise the overall cost of a product which will reduce the demand for the product, in turn decreasing the number of workers necessary to keep production in step with demand.

 

The first minimum wage laws in America resulted in putting black labor out of work (Davis-Bacon Act of 1931). In the south, black workers would hire on at a wage below their white counterparts. Because their labor was cheaper, employers would hire them because they would get more profit. The white workers union lobbied for a minimum wage law so black workers could not take the same job at a lower wage. The white unions would not admit black workers to their ranks. When employers were forced to hire black workers at a wage comparable to their white counterparts, the employers chose to hire whites and not blacks. When racist decisions did not harm the pocketbook, the employers hired based on their prejudice. But when there was an advantage to them to hire a black worker, their racist tendencies were overcome and they hired black workers because their labor costs were less. Minimum wage laws were used to put black workers out of a job.

 

While the motivation is no longer racism, minimum wage laws still tend to contribute to increased unemployment. Those most adversely effected by this are black teenagers who have a higher unemployment rate than most other groups. Without skills and without experience, they lack the contacts they need to get hired as the number of available jobs decreases.

 

BTW, the idea that most minimum wage earners are single parents trying to make ends meet is completely erroneous.

To the first bold, this is what they did for 8 years and we see where they are today.

 

To the second bold, as we saw in the last election, they do not represent the majority of Americans. They represent the so called "elites" on the East and West coasts. Nancy Pelosi is a prime example of the problems the Democrats have. She is a West coast elitist. She can't relate to middle America and has no interest in doing so.

I don't doubt your history. But today minimum wage hasn't kept up with inflation. While raising it can increase job growth. Even Fox News says so...
