That Time You Got Out Of Taking A Beating

Featured Replies

I was thinking back on this story my friend Craig told years ago.

He was a mild-mannered guy in his early 30s, and in college ministry at the time. He was in his house reading late at night when some guys started racing up & down his street. After a couple of minutes Craig went outside, yelled at them, and got in his car and went after them.

A short distance away they stopped, and Craig found himself facing 3 big dudes. When the driver challenged him, Craig said "I'm not really sure why I chased after you. I was in my study reading a Zane Grey novel, and it just seemed like the thing to do."

The (large) driver said "You like Zane Grey? Me, too. What are you reading?" And they became instant friends!

I don't have anything that comes close to this story, but I'm sure some of you do. I would love to hear them.

I was very inebriated one night at a party, I was around 20 then. I'm 6'1" and was about 240 at the time. A woman that I worked with was arguing with her boyfriend, he was about 3 inches taller than me with similar build. I was watching the argument when he shoved her.

I ran across the room and got between them...long story short next thing I knew we were headed to the back yard to fight. We'll the house empties and everyone is outside waiting for the fight. It's all a blur to me due to afore mentioned inebriation.

Next thing I know a buddy has thrown me over his shoulder in a fireman carry, throws me in the back of the car and we are out of there.

The other guy had gone to his car and gotten a gun!

Fast forward 5 years later...I'm at my new wife's uncle's house. Watching TV with one of her cousin's and we get to talking, he said he used to date a girl that worked with me...yep you guessed it...my wife's cousin was the guy that was going to shoot me! We laughed about it and he said, "My bad."

Mr. Cat says it's a miracle but I've never been in a fight in my life or even been in a situation where I thought I would have to fight my way out.

Not me. When I've stuck my nose in there, I've never gotten out of it.

Like you were this morning? :lol2:

None. I've always known my limitations, and more importantly don't drink.

Liquid courage or not, I have never been in a situation where I felt I was about to get rolled. I am a lover, not a fighter, and have always subscribed to the notion that real men find ways to deescalate conflict, not get in the middle of it.

Reading that I sound like a pansy. :lol2:

This.

I've had a couple of close calls. Once a knife was pulled on me in a Lexington bar. Once the majority of a fraternity had me and another guy circled. Once I had some conflict with a very large football player. Every time...alcohol was involved.

You forgot, one night in Bloomington I was at a ballgame

Haha I was threatened in the parking lot there but I think that was a close call avoided by him.
