I understand your point and agree with it. However I know that anyone can take the commands of holy writ and make it applied in an extreme fashion. That's what I believe these extremists are doing.

 

Jesse raises good points that the Quran lays the basis for these activities. But there are also other messages in the Quran that speak in a different way and that is what most Muslims follow IMO.

Let's be real. Those are ideologies and not under the section of Religious Liberty in the First Amendment.

 

And I do believe in Religious Liberty for all faiths in our country. Doesn't mean I have to like or agree with their doctrine. I would give the Branch Davidians the right to exist but not the right to do some of the things they did that were of an illegal nature.

It's geographically easier for evil to walk in there. Add that to the fact that they are the closest US ally and you are have a very hostile zone.

This may be a huge leap, but it seems that some on here are hinting at eradicating followers of a religion as the solution to terrorism.

That is scary to me.

I saw an interview this morning with a guy that has interrogated/interviewed Khalid Sheikh Mohammed several times. He said he asked him once about Islam being the Religion of Peace and how that went along with terrorist attacks among other atrocities. He said that KSM told him that "You look at Peace from a western perspective. Islam is the religion of peace but the only way for there to be peace was for everyone to convert to Islam, be subjugated to Islamist or killed...then there would be peace."

 

While I have no doubt that the vast majority do not feel that way, there do seem to be more than a few that do.

 

He also talked about how he'd bet that the recent attacks in London were all carried out by people raised in England with a western education and values and he wondered where they are learning the radical ideas that seem to be driving them? Seemed like what he was saying was there have to be plenty of people that think this way and are spreading those thoughts already in England and that these terrorist have all been subjected to their teachings at some point.

I think radicalization comes when these individuals don't find a peace or success in their world and choose a violent/exclusive route to make their world right. They have a guru that points out a violent exclusive way to look at holy writ and latch on.

KSM obviously knows more about the terrorist mindset than just about anybody else, but either he or the interviewer left out the biggest aspect of radicalization - the internet. Individuals sympathetic to Al Queda, ISIS, or any other group of the day can become indoctrinated or at the very least radicals can inculcate their warped world view while a terrorist sits on his couch in any place in the world.

 

Obviously it doesn't have all the answers, but I'd highly recommend the documentary American Jihad on Showtime.
