April 26, 20179 yr I found this pretty interesting. After looking at the 5 year average of deer strikes for my county (Anderson) I also am 100% convinced that a LOT of deer strikes go unreported or are unaccounted for in these statistics. Also, be REALLY careful if you live in Boone or Hopkins County. Kentucky State Police: Kentucky State Police: Deer / Automobile Collisions
April 26, 20179 yr I've had 2 real close encounters on 42 while driving through Oldham county, and I'm just waiting for one to step out in front of me on 71. I swear, they need to raffle off chances for a quota hunt for that median on 71 that goes through Jefferson, Oldham and into Henry county. If you don't see deer while driving through at dusk or dawn, you just aren't looking.
April 26, 20179 yr Author Girlfriends middle daughter hit 2 deer on her way to work about 6 weeks apart about 18 months ago. Called me in a panic the first time...2nd time was like "uggggg, Dan I hit another deer".
April 26, 20179 yr I have almost hit 2 this week and hit one a couple months ago no damage I have been very lucky.
April 26, 20179 yr This graph shows AVCs that start at just below 200,000 in 1990 and steadily increase to around 300,000 in 2004. The increase in WVCs appears to be associated with an increase in vehicle miles traveled (VMT) and an increase in deer population sizes in most regions in the United States. The occurrence of WVCs, however, is associated with many more factors, as reflected by their characteristics, which include: •More than 98 percent of WVCs are single-vehicle crashes. •89 percent of WVCs occur on two-lane roads. •WVCs occur more frequently on low-volume roads. •Compared to all motor vehicle collisions, WVCs occur more frequently on straight roads with dry road surfaces. •WVCs occur more frequently in the early morning (5–9 a.m.) and evening (4 p.m.–12 a.m.), when deer are more active and traffic volume is relatively high. •WVCs occur more frequently in spring and especially in fall, when animals move around more due to migration, mating, or hunting seasons. •The vast majority (as high as 90 percent in some states) of reported WVCs involve deer. •White-tailed deer-vehicle collisions are associated with diverse landscapes with abundant edge habitat (transitions from cover to more open habitat) and riparian habitat. https://www.fhwa.dot.gov/publications/research/safety/08034/exec.cfm The UD DOT study on the matter. Sometimes a deer just runs in the road, and there is no opportunity to avoid....otherwise, maybe knowing the characteristics above can help us to be cautious when conditions merit and risk is high.
April 27, 20179 yr When on the interstate at night I always drive in the left lane. I figure most deer will come from the right and this might give more time to react. Also most medians are pretty clear and flat enough you should be able to see any deer coming from the left. I also constantly scan the sides. Stay even more alert during fall and winter.
April 27, 20179 yr Something I am starting to notice more and more is they are grazing on the side of the road like cattle.
April 28, 20179 yr I may have told this story before, but as my kids will tell you, I always do. Years ago, on April Fools Day, my husband hit a deer in pretty small car on the expressway. The deer rolled over the top of his car and fell off the back. They both ended up in the emergency lane. Thankfully, he fared much better than the deer. A very nice guy pulled over and asked husband if he was ok. Next question was, "You mind if I take that deer?" He winched it up in his truck and was gone.
April 28, 20179 yr Some chatter that the Browns are trying to trade with the Bears for Trubisky. I find that hard to believe.
