Difference in MLB and NFL fans at games.

Featured Replies

I am basing this solely on the Reds and Bengals home games.

I have been to a lot of MLB and NFL games in Cincinnati and have never had a hard time getting along at a baseball game with other Reds fans even though I'm wearing a different teams jersey or cheering against the Reds. Example I was at Cubs and Reds game with Cubs stuff on and had a great time with Reds fans.

Now I've been to Bengals games with my Cowboys jersey on and was cussed out, threatened and had to actually almost fight my way out of the stadium with my wife and 2 kids.

Have seen fights, fans being cussed out, stuff thrown on them, etc at football games.

Why or what's the difference between both?

To dovetail with what Clyde said, I think the whole tailgating aspect allows people to "get started" several hours before the game actually starts. With baseball, most people don't start drinking til they're actually in the stadium.

Alcohol

They sell it at both and baseball fans don't act that.

Do you see baseball fans rolling into the parking lot with coolers at 7:00 in the morning?

In addition to alcohol there is a different profile for the average NFL fan vs the average MLB fan.

MLB , for various reasons, appeals more to families so you have less adults in the stands.

Just as CincySportsFan has mentioned, the tailgating tradition has people blasted even before entering the stadium, and the nature of football being a more vicious type contact sport I believe gets people riled up more so as well.

Many (not all) football fans are drunk meat headed has beens who might've played at some level themselves who still salivate at the idea of being out on the field themselves and taking someone down.

The nature of the game just adds to the whole "fight" mentality, whereas baseball is just a much more passive sport.

True

I guess ticket prices also factor into that.

I can take my whole family to a MLB game for the price of 1 NFL ticket.

Agreed with everything so far. Also there is a different feel at an MLB game when it's 1 of 162 vs 1 of 16 for NFL games. The intensity is amped up a bit more.

Ok, I'll go out in left field here. I believe football appeals to a more primitive, more tribal part of the psyche than baseball does. Football surfaces passions in people that you just don't see in baseball. Sometimes those passions lead to negative behavior. Violence is at the core of Football, unlike any other sport other than Ice Hockey, or its cousin, Rugby.

Football fans dont know how to tailgate properly for starters.

NFL fans more violent? I think Bryan Stow would differ with that.

What are NHL or NBA fans like to opposing team fans?

Anything like NFL?

NHL games also have a pretty good share of meathead fans. One thing about hockey though, is ticket prices help keep a lot of riff raff out.

Hours of tailgating before games is what makes football games different in terms of people acting foolish.

This conversation reminds of this famous George Carlin comedy routine where he contrasts baseball and football. He addresses this very issue about the 3:30 mark.
