Official Apple Bowl Thread - Johnson Central VS. Paintsville

This was an overtime game. The game ended with Jc on the 1 or 2 yard line on 4th down. Instead of running Brian Hall, who was getting 4 yards on about every carry. JC staff tried to shake it up with a pass that fell incomplete. great game.

I was going by those blue and black colored plates on the front of the barrel. There is probably some more mistakes that will be brought up.

I think that Matney will play alot of his younger players when he gets the chance. He has so far this whole season and i dont see this game being any different. When he arrived at JC, Matney said that JC had bigger ambitions than just beating Paintsville every year. Leaving your starters in the whole game during a blowout when you havent against another opponent all year would null that statement to me. I believe what he said then and JC will play just about everyone in this game if it gets the chance and we should have alot of happy young men by games end.

All this "running up the score" talk is making this former eagle feel not so proud. As much as I will like seeing a big margin of victory over the tigers, I say get the game in hand early and rest/keep from getting hurt your starters. The district games are much more important to me.

:thumb: Let's not forget that Matney accused Ashland of running up the score against a young Sheldon Clark team a few years ago and used the game as motivation for an entire year that was capped by a huge Cardinal upset of the Tomcats the following season. I also remember an easy SC win a few years ago against one of Bill Musick's team in Paintsville in which I know that Matney called off the dogs late in the first half. Matney has never struck me as somebody who routinely runs up the score on an opponent.

Nobody enjoys JC's sudden dominance over the Tigers more than me, but JC should be good enough to beat the top 1A team in the state in most years. That means that being pounded by the Golden Eagles in the Apple Bowl should not be an indicator of how Paintsville performs in the playoffs. It would be great to beat Paintsville 50-0 and then see the Tigers win a state title. That won't happen this season, but I will be pulling for Paintsville to win every game that it plays between Apple Bowls. Beating a great Paintsville team badly beats routing a weak Tigers team any day.

I'm biased too Pancake. I was the one they tried to throw it to. The most memorable game I played in along with our vistory over Breathitt that year. We were very close to becoming the first playoff team at JC, finishing in a three way tie for second place in the distict and loosing the tie break to clay county who drove 75 yards on us for the win at home with 1:27 on the clock when they got the ball. Back then only two teams out of the district went to the playoffs. I think these boys were better than we were but they sure haven't had to play Belfry, Breathitt, and Clay just to make the playoffs. That drive against paintsville had some of the hardest hitting I have ever seen. When Brian Hall hit the line of scrimage you needed ear plugs for all the popping! If we would have won that game we would have been in the playoffs. I can still see 6'6" Jerry Pelphrey diving to get a finger tip on that wide open pass play.

P.S. what position did you play Pancake?

Why is it that for so long JC got beat, and all the JC fans just took it. And now, JC finally has turned the tables on teams that normally would blow us out, and JC fans get upset over it. Maybe I am talking crazy. Does any understand what I'm saying?

I agree. I believe that we (Johnson Central supporters) have along way to go before we develope that championship mantality that the top programs have. Beating Paintsville is nice, especially for the young men so they can walk around the Apple Festival with their jersey's on, but should never be the biggest game for JC. I would just love to see the JC supporters pack The Nest when the Tomcats come to town like everyone did last year in the Apple Bowl. That would go along way in my opinion to say that we have as a county bigger ambitions than just beating Paintsville badly every year. I believe that we are on our way to getting that true championship mantality that teams like Highlands, Boyle Co., St. X, Trinity, etc. have but we need to realize the most important games are district and playoff games and not the team across the creek.

Maybe most JC fans really believe the old adage that two wrongs don't make a right. It is far easier to understand fans from a small 1A getting carried away and talking trash before, during, and after a win over a much larger school.

Most of us have always believed that the Golden Eagles should dominate the series and now that Matney is at the helm, we are not surprised to see that expectation met. I think that we "should act like we have been here before," although truth be told, no Golden Eagle team has enterred a season with more potential than this one. Respect for a football program is earned by winning on the field and by one's reaction to winning on the field The team is doing its part and the fans need to do their's.

Nothing heats up a rivaly like running up the score...

I would hope Matney would show some class and at least keep it under 60.

I would like to say that I to am getting a little tired of all the trash talk about this game. I am a fan of Johnson Co. I believe JCHS will win this game big but all the trash talk and crazy predictions is getting a little nuts. Honestly this game is a lose lose situation for JCHS. If they win, they were suppose to and if they lose it's a huge upset.

I don't have a dog in the fight so good luck to both teams and I hope you have an injury free game.

Did you play TE and your name be (D. P.)??? Here is a hint, the clay county game. I was part of the very last play of the game.

I'm at a disadvantage here I gave you a much bigger hint. There was eleven guys in on that play

PM me and I will give you a better hint.

Normally I would agree with not running up the score. However, any game against Paintsville is different. There are extenuating circumstances that I can't go into without the possibility of suspension...so I won't. But, after some of the stunts the parents and administration has pulled over at Paintsville...IMO, they deserve every butt kicking they get.

I hope Johnson Central hangs 100 on the Tigers.

I know that sounds harsh but that is how I feel. Sorry if it offends anyone.
