Open Job: Russell County

Featured Replies

They hired Billy Edge as the coach over the summer then fired him during the month of January. Replaced him with assistant coach Blankenship for the remainder of the season.

Not sure if the job is open just because of the circumstances and Blankenship is going to get it or if it is open and they are going to entertain all applicants. Bryan Milburn will have a good shot at the position.

Didn't Edge get fired from a job last year too?

Mutual decision to leave is the "technical" term for him leaving Whitefiled.

Why was Edge fired at Russell County?

For the same reasons that he left Whitefield, for I am guessing. Had trouble connecting with the players, parents and administration in a nut shell.

Some guys are really good game and practice coaches. But if you're going to run a program, sometimes you have to be a counselor, politician, and a nanny. I don't know the guy. I know he did some good things with his first group at Whitefield, and had some momentum. And then the wheels seemed to fall off the next year.

The wheels started coming off his first year about middle of the season, but he was given a chance to make some adjustments. The year finished well because he inherited a very good team. The same problems occurred in his second year and the program couldn't survivor another year so they "mutually" agreed to part ways. He would have had 8 returning seniors in his 2nd year, 7 decided not to play their senior season for him and the 8th quit half way thru the year. That left a team of no seniors, no Juniors, 7 sophomores, and some freshman and 8th graders. At the end of his 2nd season half of the sophomore class said they wouldn't play the following year if he coached. He is a nice guy and has a great family, but somebody unwilling to learn and listen and be accountable to others, tends to repeat the same mistakes again and again. Yes, unfortunately I was very close to the situation, so not just talking about what I heard.

I don't know any inside information. I just saw them play a couple of times. Again, he did some good in game things. I can't speak to all the other issues.

I don't know the specifics behind why he would have been fired, but I do know that no one could have succeeded with that Russell County team. They were a doomed ship the moment Kel Stotts left.

The Milburn guy should get the job if they want to build a program. He has the right demeanor, experience and knowledge to make them successful. He should have had the Taylor County job, but those weren't the attributes they were looking for.

He started at Williamstown, if I'm not mistaken, then transferred to Russell County.
