The other thread about PA guys got me wondering about the underrated and underappreciated guys that do radio of high school games, and I want them to know that there are a lot of us that make up a "silent majority", who don't email or call in but frequently listen in when we can't be there. In the old days, there was only Dale McMillan and Hardy Tribble (maybe Mel Webster as well?) who did radio, and they were in the tough spot of having to choose one game per night. Actually, I am surprised there aren't more guys taking advantage of this technology, but I wanted to shout out to the guys that I do know and would like to know the names of the guys I don't know.

 

Terry Niehaus, the voice of the Holy Cross Indians, and Mark Wehry, Covington Catholic, both do an outstanding job IMO, are prepared and do more research on opponents than people realize. Also, I have listened to Brad Fennell do Highlands football in the past, and I know he has a great following.

 

Pendleton County has coverage I believe, and I would like to hear if there are others and who they are.

We did games for the 8th & 9th Region up until 2 years ago with Tri State Internet Sports Radio. There is a possibility that we will be returning next year to do games. We would do audio only.

 

Dave Schabel and his crew have been broadcasting for Bishop Brossart since before us. He would know how long.

 

"Colonel" Mike Montgomery has been doing 8th Region games for many years as well. He broadcasts the entire 8th region tournament like we did the 9th.

 

Terry & Mark do a great job with Holy Cross & Cov Cath. I heard that Walton-Verona started to broadcast football last year, but don't know who is calling the games.

Obviously I'm going to say this but JT Teegarden does a great job for Bracken County. (BCSC) he sounds great and has been with the program for 25+ years and just started last year. The online radio has thrived and done a lot better than suspected.

 

Also Danny Weddle at WFTM who has been calling games since 1978 I think. He's one of the best in the state at his job.

 

I think it's cool to see broadcasters who have been with the same team for decades.

How do you get "dialed in" to these other guys? Because I'll tell ya, Holy Cross having a link to a widget on BGP that gets you right in is a tremendous convenience.

Brossart's is actually a webcast, not a radio broadcast. HOF'er Dave Schabell does an outstanding job with his website "promoting all things Brossart". He has games archived, history of Brossart teams, legend pages etc. And his webcasts of all boys basketball games, all football games, some girls hoops games, and even some soccer games with his mini lap top and less than extravagant set up does a very entertaining job.

I miss when Randy Wilson, and Kevin Rengering used to cover NKY basketball games on AM radio. Always liked listening to those guys. Wish there was a way to bring something like that back.

The problem with actual "Radio" broadcasts is it's all about the cash. I looked into broadcasting the 9th region finals a few years ago and for just the 1 game, it was going to be $1,000.00. Local radio doesn't care about high school games. Internet is the best way.

Internet streaming has been a blessing for we "local" school/team specific guys.

With radio now streaming their broadcasts, they have opened up a world-wide audience, where previously, they were accessible only within the range of their station. I have folks on BMustangs who listen from all over the United States, China , and Europe. I even listened to one of our football broadcasts last year while in Ireland. A major benefit to we high school streaming guys is that we archive our broadcasts. You can go back and listen to any broadcast aired over the past decade (most of the time). At the end of the season, I download our broadcasts and put them on CDs and give them to the players to have forever.

 

Internet streaming can be as simple or as complex as you want. i still use a 2004 Toshiba Netbook that operates on Windows XP. I do not use a mixer, but use the one that comes with the program within the computer, and I will put our sound quality up against ANYONE's in the nation - Radio or Internet. When I fell in love with the Toshiba I bought a second one, and when the first one went out, I found a new one on EBAY and purchased it, so that I always had a backup. Last week at Mason County, Toshiba Number Two went out and I'm on my third one. I will be shopping again here shortly on EBAY for another backup.

 

Many internet broadcasters are "sponsored up" and use all of the bells and whistles to give the appearance of being "big time", but in actuality, unless they are doing audio/video, all you need is a laptop, a streaming provider (CovCath and I use EZStream) a pair of cheap ($29) headsets and a partner and away you go. I also use sound files to play as "commercials", promoting the various sports and aspects of our high school.

 

Willie Schlarman, our head coach back in 2002 encouraged me to look into internet broadcasting and I took the ball and have been running with it ever since. I've been blessed to have had many talented partners dating back to Bill Klopp when we first started out. Frank Niemeyer, who has a marvelous radio voice, joined me in 2005 and still does some games. TAC is my present partner, with Mike Schack, Ted MacDonald, John Wieland and others joining me when in a pinch.

 

Danny Weddle, who broadcasts the Mason County Royals games via WFTM Radio is the master, and always will be. He works alone on most broadcasts, which I find incredibly difficult to do, and only do on rare occasions. Phillip Hay, a former WFTM guy still calls games for the All "A" State Tournament. If I have mentors, those would be the two guys.

 

I too remember the Dale and Hardy productions, as well as the Gary Ball and Kevin Rengering renditions of 9th Region Basketball.

 

The only down side to internet broadcasting is that, while we can now use cell phones instead of having to secure a land line, the computer technology has become less user friendly to internet broadcasters than it was nearer the turn of the century. Now, unless you can find old dinosaur laptops, you are forced to use mixers and higher ticket headsets, with reduced sound quality. It would be nice if just one computer company would manufacture a laptop with internet broadcasters in mind, that would keep things simple and allow us to function as we did in the past. BUT, as I always say - Change is always for the worse.

 

I often listen to other internet broadcasters, and enjoy listening to Mark Whery at CovCath. One night he even sang the National Anthem. I trained the Augusta guys and the Walton-Verona guys, and have talked to others who have shown an interest in internet broadcasting. It has worked well for us, and our fans even now count on us to "Paint the picture." Basketball comes easy to me, since I've been around it all my life. I also love football and think it's fun, even though the players are far away and sometimes always look alike. Soccer not so much, because there is no continuity to the game, and you can't describe chaos. I do it because its important to our kids.

Schabbs is awesome but that other guy that's with him sometimes, Gabe Entenmann, needs to stick with the family business of making donuts. Personally, I like the Crumb Cakes.
