Fundamentally, nothing. It won't shorten the games since intentional walks have been decreasing.

Well, since pitch counts have become such a big deal these days, it saves pitchers' arms some.

Accomplished nothing, make it look like they are trying. This saves very little time.

Keeps Billy Hamilton from swiping one if you lob one up there.

Slow Pitch Softball has done this for years, no big deal.

Heck I say if someone jacks a homerun, let them just head to the dug out once they cross first base.

You're right, and that's something I hadn't really considered.

I'm too lazy to look it up -- did the MLB release its rationale for the change? I assume they cite to pace of play, although this will have a very limited impact.

It was changed because it is stupid to go out to mound, discuss what they are going to do, decide to walk the batter intentionally, throw 4 balls, go back out to the mound and take that pitcher out, bring in a new pitcher, let him throw 8 warm-ups even though he has been throwing all inning in the bullpen, then next batter hits a chopper that score a run and it is now second and third with two outs, so lets pitch around this hitter and walk him unintentionally to load the bases so we can get a lefty versus lefty match-up, oh wait Pinch Hitter.

This would have shortened the season a month back when Bonds played.

I don't think 4 batting practice fastballs is going to save a pitcher's arm.

I forgot to use my sarcasm filter.
