Setting up the playoffs this way really minimizes your regular season, once you get in there is a slight advantage to be #1 but no advantage to be a #2 over a #3.

 

I wouldn't say "no advantage." The 2 seed still gets the home playoff game.

For Russell this means two more scrimmages before the real games begin ... This format puts the season on the coaches .... they have to keep kids focused , tuned and ready. Coaches challenge for Devils is attending many birthday parties, getting presents , everyone singing your praises , eating cup cakes and then having a dog fight in the third game ... variety is the spice of life ...

If youve already faced a team once already that season then why should you have to play them again in the playoffs, i agree with everyone else on this one. This new playoff format is terrible, IMO.

I can say without a doubt that there are going to be plenty of teams that will be glad they have a chance at a rematch against a district rival!Think of

it from a player standpoint.You are a senior,you lost to a district team and you might not ever get a shot at them again vs. a very good chance to avenge a loss with this system!

My understanding is that regions no longer exist, so there can't be a regional championship. After the district championship round the next round is just the third round/state quarterfinals, with district winners paired based on a blind draw (someone feel free to correct me on this).

 

I have mixed feelings about the new playoff system. I won't miss 3-hour-plus trips to a first round playoff game, but it was kinda neat to keep track of the "other" district to see who you might be matched up with in the playoffs.

From what I read, winners of second round games will now be district champs. Winners of third round games will be region champs. Winners of fourth round games will be semi-state champs. Winners of fifth round will be State Champions.

 

And from the emails we got from the stet office, those 3 hour first (and second) round trips were a large part of the discussion.

I think the new system is to predickable, making the playoffs very boring in the first and second round. We will see more blowouts and less upsets with this system. The old way made distict play so important to get a higher seed, now distict play before the playoffs mean little to nothing. IMO 4A might get some benafit from it leaving the other three classes to make it work. A very poor job on the side of khsaa.

I don't think the current coaches seem to agree with you. Most are saying in the papers I read and comments I make that they understand the need to curtail travel and right now, the way the basketball coaches feel that "football is getting everything they want", the football folks are wise to just lay low I think. Frankly, change is what people don't like, IMO of course. And we can see in December which one of us was right, but I think it is even less predictable than in the past. You could really in most years, guess who the final eight in each class were going to be, and that led to the better teams continuing to get better. You will see some teams in round three and four who have never been there before, and just like the changes in the college NCAA basketball tournament, this will lead to new teams success. But time will tell.

By the way, are you talking about their Board that made the decision, their committee that pushed for changes (which is made up of their coaches), or just who did a "poor" job? Or did the result just not meet your specific approval.

Most of all, I dislike losing the regional championship game.

But, under the old system, both teams had to win their way into a rematch, and one of them had to win on the road.

I know as a Bullitt East fan, I want to play Central again in the playoffs. If I read it right next year the district games will be in weeks 5-7-9. So you could play the same team 2 out of 3 weeks but not back to back.

BUT......Gas prices dictated a huge amount of the decisions about the new playoff format, and financially I understand the move.

If gas prices entered into the picture, why have Ashland in the same district with Lexington teams and Woodford Co. and Montgomery Co. Not only do these games cost the schools more in expenses, the gates will be sad!!! Bad decision IMO.

This is not basketball, but you are right the system seems more like a basketball tournament then a high school football playoffs. The season is where the distict title is won in most if not all high school football system around the country, not in the playoffs. Change is not aways good ether, why try to fix something that is not broke. The system was pretty good not prefect but good. But time will only tell.:flame:
