IN OUR REGION? I don't think some people in the BLACK and GOLD would agree with you. He may be good, he may be the best, but I don't know if he is even the best inthe district, let alone the region. Shawn Grimm from JC averaged over 20 yds per carry against LC. It's hard to pull away from that.

 

 

I'll agree with you there. The Grimm kid is pretty darn tough. There is also a kid from Russell that he's forgetting about. Matt is doing a great job and I hope he continues because he's a great kid who I've known a very long time but you have to play great for more than 3 weeks for me to consider you one of the best. He may be emerging as a top back but only time will tell.

Prestonsburg Vs Ashland,

 

 

I guess I must have been watching a different game than some of the posters here, because from the 40 yard line where I was, I never saw Ashland in trouble, this game was never close even in the first half.

 

How did Ashland start the game? They recovered a fumble and promptly marched it down the field and scored.

 

Ashland “Ground Game” was on target but the passing game wasn’t, with Ashland throwing two nice passes on target, and the rest was strong armed way pass receivers

 

Some here has posted that Walters was hit in the back while not even in the play this was true, but it wasn’t the infraction that had the coaching staff raving on the sidelines. Aaron Erwin 77 was in a pile up with his knees pinned between players while a Blackcat player stood over him after the play shoving down on his chest which appeared to look like the kid was trying to blow out his knees... this is just not acceptable behavior.

 

I agree with Hart this series needs to end.

 

The second half proved to be all Tomcats, with about 6 minutes or so to play Ashland put in the JV defense and the Blackcats took advantage of it marching down the field and scoring. Ashland then drove the ball back into the red zone and took a knee to end the game instead of risking any more injuries.

 

Ashland passing game was lacking accurate passing but the OL gave him time to throw and the ground game was solid. Ashland won a game in what has proved to be hostile country, say what you will, but I call this a good win for Ashland

Just from a quick cursory glance at the posts, I have noticed more than one saying "Pburg simply wore down."

 

IMO this has been an unfortunate trend for the Blackcats over the past 5 years. The two state title teams from Belfry were probably not quite as talented overall as Prestonsburg, but seemed to be better conditioned and a little more adept to grinding for 4 quarters.

I think it's funny how everyone always criticizes D. Martin all the time but when he supports your argument, then he's what he said is ok with you.

 

This is, of course, in direct contrast with the Ashland crowd who whimsically reply "that's just Dickie, don't take him seriously" when he's called on low-brow commentary about officials' calls that go against the Tomcats...

Rather, the problem is usually lack of depth... That was the REAL difference (other than the two great Belfry RB's) between the Pirates and Blackcats in '03 and '04, especially on the OL and DL. Note: the last time Prestonsburg has had "enough" talented linemen was 2001. Even then, depth was only adequate. One would have to go back to 1994 to see a Blackcat team with really good depth in the trenches (though that team lacked enough skill players...LOL).

 

I'll agree Belfry was "more adept to grinding". Though, to be fair to P-burg, that's exactly what the Pirates were used to doing (and still do) with their offense. Prestonsburg's was a more balanced attack that passed effectively (vs. making a defense play more "honest"). Those two Blackcat teams didn't have a true fullback, so were disadvantaged running between the tackles.

 

As far as "conditioning"...actually, the problem may be opposite. Very few coaches run his players as much as Coach D.. I suspect a number of incoming bigger framed Freshman (from Adams and Allen) that haven't learned to condition (nice way of saying "out of shape") don't go out for football because of that.

I think they wore down also.

Some may have been conditioning, I don't know their situation there, but I think some might have been because of the size difference of the two teams' lines.

Yes. It is on a local channel, they are based out of P-burg. They show all the Prestonsburg sporting events. The guys that do the commentating are crazy. It is on charter communications channel 3. Usually they show the football games 3 or 4 times a week.

I happen to be at Putnam on Sunday for the better part of the afternoon and watch the players who work at the JFL games. I notice a difference in the way they interact now vs. two or three weeks ago. They seem to be much more relaxed around each other, much more playful. I think that the chemistry is getting better and once everyone is one the same page then the focus can be on limiting mistakes. I believe this team has grown and it is evident not just in W's.

I think that the are still a ways from playing their best. It will be interesting to see how they pull together or split in a pressure situation. One defining moment could be significant.
