Doss just had 3 guys offered by Purdue. I have had some good teams/players in my 25 years as a head coach. I have never had a BCS school roll in and offer 3 players. Highlands is fine. Mortal.... But fine.

 

Coach Gruneisen use to tell me that things are never as good as they seem or as bad as they seem. I think that applies to Highlands during their runs and during their tough times as well. It applies to all programs. Most of us are just a few plays or players away from being very good or very bad.

I am not a Highlands fan so no homerism from me. I don't buy one bad season means it is over. That is my point. Two years ago they lost a close game in the state semi-finals.

 

I also don't buy your revisionist history that every game was a blowout for 25 years. They lost games. They didn't win 25 straight state titles. Covington Catholic even beat Highlands a few times in those 25 years.

 

Looking ahead, I think it will be tough for Highlands to be as good. Other programs paid attention and have caught up with Highlands. The quality of football in N. Ky. and other areas is much better than it was even 10 years ago.

 

I saw Highlands play this year and the biggest thing for me from my small glimpses was they didn't use their personnel right. You can't be that small on the defensive line and compete against the schedule they played. Now, that could be a red flag to coaching concerns. If I see that as a fan in one half of football, why didn't the coaches try to make changes? I heard they did make some changes late in the year but they should have seen that in the first couple games - assuming my assessment is right - and since they did make changes it probably was right. So, bfritz, if you want to revel in a moment of joy as a CCH fan - after so many years of pain - and be a sore winner by taking shots at your rival, maybe that is something for you to latch onto.

 

If you are trying to say there are problems in the program, I will reserve judgment. One bad season doesn't make me go there. You know about that. It's like a 5-8 season two years ago for Covington Catholic shouldn't have caused Colonels fans to say Eviston has no clue. Let's see what happens the next year or two in Ft. Thomas before we say it is a downfall. That is my point.

Changes on,defense should've been made much earlier in the year but I think BW was giving the Coordinator the benefit of the doubt. New year and now new Coordinator. I expect the defense to be much improved and nastier.

 

Id like to see some athletes go both ways and not stand on the sidelines rotating at WR where they may get 3-4 balls thrown their way in a game.

No Dale. When one of the Best all time coaches in the state steps down for whatever reason it's darn near impossible to fill those shoes.

 

Up until recent years, you could expect their JV squad to put a running clock on a team like Grant County, and now their varsity squad loses to them in the first round?

 

What caused the downfall?

 

Is it as simple as Dale leaving?

 

Is it that Highlands closed their enrollment borders and would only let students in from the immediate area?

 

Is it that other schools established feeder programs and their teams are getting better?

 

Is there some other possibility that I'm missing?

 

Will they ever return to domination or even as the leader in Northern Kentucky?

Highlands can only take so many students. When there is no room due to some bigger classes, the tuition students were limited. But it's been proven time and time again that the tuition athletes are a very small part of the team.

 

Obviously some NKY teams have gotten better. Changed things around and modeled what other successful schools are doing.

 

What you're missing is that EVERY program has ups and downs. Just happens that Highlands ups and downs are spread out and we had a one year dip this year. It happens.

 

I'm not sure you'll see any NKY team dominate like Highlands did for so many years. But you don't have the 2nd most wins in the nation and just drop off the map. They'll have their years where they are dominate.

We already established that I was wrong there, but regardless, it was to a team in the same class in the FIRST ROUND OF THE PLAYOFFS.

Define downfall? One losing season? If that's the case then there are a bunch of teams on the downfall.

We defined that, as well, with many possible definitions, like how they blew every team out and now put together a losing record.

 

When a team has one of the top two most successful teams in the country for 25 years, where they would blow teams out regularly, and then has a 3 win season, if you try to say "it's just one off season," then I think you're high on something.

 

And it's been more than one season: Losing in the final game in Dale's last year, and then going .500 in the regular season the next year (I think, but did make it to the semi-finals of state), then now having a three win season, and you think all is good and well in Fort Thomas?

 

Looks like a downward spiral to me, and that could be your definition of downfall if you need one.

There's that big of a drop-off in talent? Why? How? I thought the feeder program supplied Highlands with all the talent it needed. Highlands had enough talent to two-platoon and destroy teams, and now they suddenly lack enough talent to have kids only playing on one side of the ball?
