So how many kids you think played college football from teams in the past? Curious to hear this answer because I honestly cannot come up with a ton as you might be suggesting. Perhaps fodder for a different thread.

 

This would need a whole other thread to discuss. It's not just the number of kids that are playing in college in one class compared to the others. There are a whole lot of other factors to that discussion if we are trying to use the number of kids playing in college to justify that the talent levels were similar on each of those last two teams compared to the previous 8 years. .

Moeller has won 9 games the last 2 years including a 4-6 season this year. Does that mean they're on a downfall?

Talent wasn't even close the eight years prior to the last two. Meaning it did fall off and that's not a knock on the last two years, it is what it is. Call it talent, speed, discipline, call it whatever but it wasn't the same.

I'm going to borrow a point made by another Highlands poster. The talent was there, just not as much as in the past. In the past they were almost 3 deep at most positions with very little to no drop off in skill. The past two years the depth hasn't been there. Still had talented players but not as many. Yeah they have 100 kids on the sidelines but having a big roster doesn't guarantee success. The drop off in skill level was more significant than in the past.

 

I guess the question is "Should the coaches adjust their philosophy on platooning? Should they have put the best 11 athletes on the field at all times at the cost of getting game experience for the underclass men?"

I agree the last couple years you got to put your best 11 on the field. You have to have a ton of talent to platoon and its ok to give in and play kids both ways if that's what's best. I do think they have talent but like you said just not as much. Its the perfect storm right now. What I mean by that is you lose a hall of famer in Dale, your talent drops off, numbers that is and lets give other schools some credit. Ryle, Cooper, Simon, Scott County and some of the others are pretty dam good now. What's the future hold? Who knows...I think they are looking at a 500 record this year, hope I am wrong. They have lost that edge and what I mean is about 5 mins into the game the other team thinks they can win. That wasn't the case from 07 to 14. It's not like they went 9 years without winning a district title or haven't made it past the regional title game in 10 years. They did both in 2015. That is one season ago. Your thread is premature.

It's two years. Down years happen from time to time (regardless how down they are and what their record was)...it happens. History tells us they will be back. You can continue to look at it thru a microscope that only includes the last two year, but for someone that's been around for a long time, we've seen this before and they always recover.

 

Heck you say the dominance started 25 years ago. So lets go back to then. Did people back then have any idea they were going to go on a 25 year dominate run or did they just think they were decent? My point, they had no clue what HHS was going to do and they were average at the time and they turned it back around. Again, i'll go with history and history tells me they will be just fine. If BGP was around back then, I'm sure we would have been having the same discussion (has HHS come back to the pack). And fast forward to present day and we are talking about 25 years of dominance.

Before there was a playoff, there were many different national titles. Here's a small sample of some dynasties that fell off after a particular run.

 

Oklahoma ’73-’80 – 5 titles

USC ’72-79 – 5 titles

Nebraska ’80-’84 – 5 titles

Miami ’83-’91 – 7 titles
