January 26, 20179 yr Does that also go for all the Middle Eastern countries that grow and supply OPIUM, which is used for pain pills, heroin, etc. While about 90 percent of the world's opium comes from Afghanistan, only about 5 percent of America's does, per a recent study. Our bigger problems are right across the border in Mexico and in South America. There are unbelievable amounts of lawlessness there and apart from the vast sums of money spent in Columbia in the 1990s, we haven't done a ton about it.
January 26, 20179 yr You and I know inner city black kids are not going to the burbs to charter schools with their vouchers which DJT's Education Secretary wants to do. They will carve the really good students off (or the good athletes) and leave inner city schools worse than they are. No way gang member from Covington is going get in Ft Thomas with voucher in hand, no way. If they let those guys and gals in then maybe we can turn it around. They also won't build section 8 housing in those burbs, nope. We will stick them on this cool hill with a view, and wad them all together again. Get them help but not in my school or neighborhood. Why do you think they throw stupid amounts of money to inner city housing and schools. To keep them out of their neighborhoods? Money doesn't fix their problems. Real opportunities with all kids will. I've been saying this.
January 26, 20179 yr The border wall may help with supply for a time. Lots of heroin streaming across the border from Mexico, but the Mexican drug trade came about because the Coast Guard shut down a lot of the boat traffic routes used to get drugs to the US from South America in the 1980s. They find another way. We need to find a better way to cut this off at the source... and when I think of how to pull that off, I'll let the powers that be know all about it. Economic opportunity outside the drug trade seems fundamentally important. That's tough to do because there are some certified lunatics running some of those South American countries where these drugs are coming from. Mexico should be where we start. While the wall is a point of contention, we need to fundamentally alter the way we work with the Mexican government to try and shut these people down.
January 26, 20179 yr Question for everyone. If we have had all these problems thats being discussed, Where has the last few presidents been and why has it been left to Trump to figure out? I agree this is a tough task and not one thats going to be easy. But why has the funds that were earmarked for this not been used? Why has the border patrol, ICE, etc been reduced? Why have mayors of cities been allowed for a few years now to just decide that they were not going to follow the laws?
January 26, 20179 yr Author Must be looking in the mirror. :thumb: Nah. I see a black dude that needs to trim his salt and pepper beard when I look in the mirror.
January 26, 20179 yr What this would ultimately mean remains to be seen. But I am completely confident that if Obama had made the same statement, many would be shouting that it was the beginning of Martial law. Edited January 26, 20179 yr by mcpapa never mind, hit "edit" instead of "quote"

But I am completely confident that if Obama had made the same statement, many would be shouting that it was the beginning of Martial law. I am confident that you are correct. Executive orders and such are seen differently through different lenses.

January 26, 20179 yr Perhaps we should build a wall. It might help for a while, at least I hope it will. I don't think it will do much long term without significant social and legal changes on the Mexican side of it.

I actually agree with you there. Hoping Trump does too, a tourniquet is great but you still have to fix what's happening inside.
