D's or R's - Which political party is more "religious"?

Featured Replies

Excuse my ignorance, but what do you mean by spiritual. What do you believe in? I've just always heard people say they are spiritual without ever understanding what that means exactly.

That's a deep one. Very deep. I have to get off here for now. Got to up very early in the morning but I promise you I will provide you a response as soon as I have the time to give to this important question. I appreciate your interest.

Statistically somewhere over 85% of evangelical Christians identify as Republican.

That stat gives credibility to my comment that Republicans are more dogmatic.

I would say that even though Christian in general identify themselves as Republicans, a vast majority are also Libertarian.

I have absolutely no data to back that up. Just experience with probably less then 0.1% of Christians in the country.

Those numbers are a direct result of Ronald Reagan, Jerry Falwell, and the Moral Majority.

I would think that if you looked at this in regards to age, the Under 40 group that is more religious is Republicans. In my opinion.

I know many Republicans who never attend church, but are still believers. I know some Democrats who attend weekly and some who are agnostic. I was raised Catholic and never "got it'. I started going back to a non denominational church about 4 years ago and have really enjoyed it. It is not preachy or pushy. I often speak about the experience I am getting to others and even invite them to look into it, but I never push the issue. Religion does not need to be pushed. It also does not need to be mocked or belittled as I have seen several times here on BGP.

I'm curious what drew you to this conclusion. I would have guessed the opposite.

If you're saying generally Christians lean Republican and have libertarian opinions favoring less government most of the time I concur. If you mean people that actually consider themselves Libertarian (whether or not registered) I am under the impression that they tend to not be religious. If you mean something entirely different, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Tolerance is what has led to Christians losing the 10 Commandments in school and prayer at school and games.

It's what led to letting a statue of Satan be put on courthouse lawn.

And it's the Christians fault for being tolerant.

Maybe that was Gods plan for the end though.

See I saw it as justice and implementation of the US Constitution. I define it as freedom rather than tolerance.

It's impossible to truly know, but I'd venture a guess that they're about even.

One, the right, is typically more "open" about it, but faith and religious beliefs are such a private matter that it's impossible to know what those who are more reserved believe.

Without reading all the posts... I don't believe this can be boiled, nor should it, into a yes/no issue. I don't believe labeling and stereotyping solves anything just perpetuates conflicts and/or gives a soapbox to share one's own beliefs.

IMO it would be more productive to find that union where we all share values and grow on that.

I have backtracked and read some posts which are very thoughtful and enlightening.
