The Grove has football?

Middle-school.

The city has a team. It is not affliated with the school.

Brossart Football - 27 Players (Sr-Fr) - 1-3

Obviously the focus of this team and this season is not on a sterling W-L record but in establishing a program and learning the game.

We are very proud of the accomplishments of this team so far.

First Game - 22-12 Loss To Holy Cross JVs at Holy Cross

Second Game - 38-16 Win Over Manchester, Ohio (First Year JV Team)

Third Game - 45-7 Thumping by AAAA Scott County JV - Tied 7-7 in second half.

Forth Game - 43-14 Loss To Boone County JV. Lead 7-6 after 1st Period.

We have pictures, game reports, and even a broadcast of the Boone County Game at: http://www.bmustangs.com/Ftbl-SectionIndex.html

Next Game Saturday 11:30am At New Richmond, Ohio

The 1st game was well played by both teams. But that was Holy Cross Freshman Team.

I guess I got there late and assumed they were the JVs.

You know what happens when you "assume" - I stand corrected!

The Mustangs have done a great job putting together a team. Too bad they couldn't have started a few years ago I hear the soccer goalie is a stud.

Among quite a few others!! It will take time to build the program, but they're off to a good start!!

I hope he was already in the end zone! ;)

Are the Mustangs playing mostly freshmen? I saw they won their game against the New Richmond freshmen team today. If they are, then they are having a very good year, winning two games, while losing to Holy Cross's freshman. You can't expect freshman to beat JV teams. If they are playing sophomores and juniors or even seniors then their wins over freshman teams aren't much to talk about.

They play kids from all four classes, but the team is heavy with freshmen and sophmores. They do play three seniors, but they don't play against freshmen teams likd today. So far they've played Holy Cross's freshmen and New Richmond's today. Scott County and Boone, both 4-A, were both losses to JV teams and Manchester is another start up JV team made up of all classes. I'm pretty certain the rest of the year will be all true JV teams.

As with most start up teams they are playing everyone and trying to learn each week. They won today using a 5'5"--115 # third spring QB, and a first time running back due to injuries, etc. They obviously have a long way to go to become competitive with the established programs, as evidenced by Holy Cross's first victory tonight over a top NKY single A team, in their 8th year (I think) of football. The team seems to be improving and maturing each week. There is no "magic bullet" when starting a football program, but the encoouraging thing about today's victory was the role the younger, formerly backup kids played in their first extended action!! Their program is on the right track and will be fine, and doesn't need any backhanded shots, but rather praise for trying hard and never giving up!!!!
