Brossart & Silver Grove

Cannibalization of our other successful athletic programs was/is my primary concern to the startup of football at a school with an enrollment of just under 400.

While this year's team seems to be comprised for the most part of players who had no other athletic nitch, I am not naive enough to think that this will remain the trend.

Football is a major, spotlight, revenue-raising, shape the reputation of your school, sport. Soccer isn't. Since we didn't offer football and most of our incoming athletes had played soccer from the pee-wees up, soccer became our fall sport of choice and we have done quite well at it.

Now that we have football, I would suspect that many of those who would have normally chosen to play soccer will divide themselves between the two sports. If one team is going to thrive and the other suffer I would certainly expect football to become the dominant fall sport and soccer to be played on a more recreational type basis in the future at our high school.

If as BGG states, the population explodes in Southern Campbell County and our school is prepared to meet the influx of new talent, perhaps soccer will still be able to hold its own. NCC seems to do both quite well.

As we create a junior high program to groom future football Mustangs, I think that too will create a more widespread football mentality within our incoming freshmen classes of the future.

I made the rounds of our grade school feeder schools this past week. At three of them there were students in the playground at lunch or recess. Guess what all three groups were playing??? Football (or some form of football.)

Being primarily a basketball guy I realize also that football is going to take its toll on our hoops program in the long run as well, with some minor possible benefits (additonal athletes).

Peaceful co-existance among the sports without anyone becoming too turfy, forcing our kids to choose a year-round "profession," will be the key to all three sports succeeding - only time will tell.

Joining a district or not is a tough call but with only 24 FR/Soph/JRs the numbers are the only problem the lack of football experience is another concern. You don't want that number to dwindle any and if it does the whole program could go.

Pendleton Co at least has put together some wins playing a non-distirct schedule. If they were playing CovCath and Highlands every year and trailing 54-0 at haltime would it be any better? Plus Pendleton is a AAA school without a perenial state contending soccer team so it is apples and oranges.

Look at Class A Bracken County. They can't field any numbers because of basketball and that isn't even in the same season. Brossart has state contending soccer, golf, and cross country teams all in the same season as football.

All Play I think you should check your scoreboards before you make comments about Pendletons soccer team. They have won two regional titles in a row and are should win it again this year.I know for a fact their football numbers are low the last couple of years because some kids that played football earlier have jumped to soccer because of their success.:fight:

Sorry no slight meant to PC. I'll be the first to tell you I don't follow soccer. But I have seen that Brossart is always highly state ranked and winning a lot in soccer. And I'm sure PC had a lot of the same soccer/football conflicts when they started football (and as you stated even today) although they are a lot bigger school.

Not trying to slight PC on this one either, but their region is not exactly a soccer hotbed?? They and Harrsion had the only competitive programs last year, and Brossart handled PC 4-0 in their regular season game. Being a much larger school, PC should be able to sustain both programs.

The question I was posing was even though PC is a much larger school (3-A), it is suffering from dwindling numbers in football? Is this due to a lack of district play, or playing a decent schedule (even though it might make for more losses initially); and kids thinking "what's the use"??

I don't know. Brossart would be in a unique situation because the district they would be joining (Dayton, Bellevue, Beechwood, Ludlow) none of the teams have soccer programs competing for players.

What exactly are Brossarts enrollment numbers.. I would imagine that in just a few years they would be very close to being a 2A school. If that were the case getting their football program up to respectablility might be even more difficult after the changes are made to a 6 Class System in Ky. (Ridiculous move by the KHSAA IMO)

their football numbers should be a lot greater than they are for whatever reason. All I am saying is that I know a few kids that used to play football are now playing soccer IMO because of the soccer teams success. If Brossarts soccer team was terrible their would probably be a few start playing football because of it.Typical Brossart statement about someone elses situation and we beat PC 4-0.Just have to say you're better than everyone else. When it has nothing to do with the thread.

Brossart's enrollment numbers are 398 ninth through twelveth - co-ed.

In an earlier statement I said that our soccer players have played the game from the pee-wees up and have an alligiance to the soccer program.

I think that this will reamin the norm with the upper-crust fotbollers but some of the margainal soccer players may weigh their options and choose to give football a try.

As a player though, not being in a district, what are you working for?

Play 10 games and be done. I'd rather get whooped then schedule teams I know I can beat. You dont get know better by playing teams you know your going to beat big. Same thing could be said vice versa. To be the best you have to beat the best. I think it would be better to just jump in and play. It may hurt the morale but so willing knowing you have no chance for a 11th game.

Its high school football, its anyones game come Friday Night.

I didnt know SRs could play in a JV game. Is that only because they have a JV team? I know Pendelton when they started, they didnt allow SR's to play.
