Are the Mustangs playing mostly freshmen? I saw they won their game against the New Richmond freshmen team today. If they are, then they are having a very good year, winning two games, while losing to Holy Cross's freshman. You can't expect freshman to beat JV teams. If they are playing sophomores and juniors or even seniors then their wins over freshman teams aren't much to talk about.

The win over Manchester was to a first-year program such as ourselves and we showed there (up 33-0) that we were much farther advanced than they were, and the win over New Richmond was against their freshmen team who were 2-1 with a narrow loss to the Beechwood freshmen.

 

Although we had some bright spots in both games, our losses to Boone and Scott County were to their JVs and the scores (43-7 and 45-14) indicated that we are not ready to compete with the biggest, best JV teams out there.

 

No seniors played today vs New Richmond except the PAT kicker.

The QB today was sophomore (5'5" - 115) Drew Braunwart.

The team is made up of seven freshmen, eight sophomores, nine juniors, and three seniors. We are playing games simply to gain experience regardless of whether they are freshmen or JV teams who are providing the competition.

The great majority of our players had never worn a helmet, let alone played the game prior to this year.

For who they are and who they are playing we are pleased with the progress that they have made so far.

As far as wins and losses go - if we are going to play the game it's best to win - but gaining experience and making progress is what this team is all about.

IMO opinion if Brossart wants to play a varsity schedule the next two years they should do it as a non-district team. That will allow them time to get some valuable experience and a chance to get the numbers up. Although with a state title contending soccer team they may be a whole other story.

I agree with APNW in that another year of JV or a non district schedule would do their program more good than getting manhandled by district varsity teams most weeks next year. You are probably right. The kids, fans, supporters, seem to favor jumping into varsity district play next year, but may be talking with their hearts instead of their heads.

 

I think the athlete base on the football team will increase dramatically next year. Most of the better athletes in the school were either already committed to a sport or adopted a wait and see attitude. I expect a lot of our present freshmen and incoming freshmen to jump on the football train next season.

 

Correct me if I'm wrong but if we were to play district competition for the next two years our only mandatory competition would come from Bellevue, Ludlow, Dayton, and Beechwood and the rest of the schedule would be made up of the same teams that an independent schedule would be made up of - am I right, or am I missing other teams that we would have to play?

 

Whatever! Given the job that these coaches have done with the hand that they have been dealt this year and the progress that this team has made this year I expect us to be playing district varsity competition next year for better or worse.

Probably a good idea. The talent is walking the halls, but as with all small schools, its a matter kids of chosing sports. Until the football program gets established, its not going to lure kids from the other sports, especially the better upperclassmen. Brossart's bigger issue IMO is the lack of a history with the true developmental programs like CC Red Devils, or the new CC programs. As Mustang said, one of the biggest obstacles this year is learning "football", not overall athleticism. As they progress, they will become a viable option for "football kids", not just athletes. Trust me, watch the sidelines & intermissions at any Mustang game and you'll see the raw ability running (or throwing) around. It's a matter of them having some exposure to football, and commiting to that sport.

 

I'd heard something about having to wait three years (I think) to join a district if they didn't commit next year. I'm sure they will take their lumps if they move to a district, but has it really helped Pendleton for example by avoiding this move for years, and now apparently suffering numbers issues?? Do you bite the bullet early, take your lumps but show your commitment to a big time program; or wait for years and hope you can be competitve???? :confused:

I agree they stepped into a mess much the same as Coach Styer did in Camel land his first season. Yes I believe the new district the Mustangs would be in, would include the teams you listed. The balance of the schedule could be with anyone they chose to schedule. Hopefully much thought will go into that decision and as you say, their hearts will not override the wiser choice for at least another season when your numbers will improve.

Cool--Just seen BB take a lot of shots from the Campbell faithful over the football issue. I personally agree it may be too early, but Mustang probably has a closer ear to the situation. Anyone know at what point Holy Cross entered district competition??

Good points!! I think it will all start at the younger levels, and let's face it; some of the other programs will suffer short term, until the school grows, which should happen with the pending development in southern Campbell County. All probably reasons to put off joining a district, but using the PC example again; do kids lose interest if there's "nothing to play for"??

Brossart football is competing against Brossart soccer/golf/cross-country and basketbal for players. There may be a few kids at NCC and Campbell Co playing football that would have attended Brossart if they had football but not a great number now or in the future. Successful Football programs cannibalize every sport at a school.

Looking at the last several classes, possibly one big-armed golfer and a couple of role player cross country runners might have helped the football program; but none had any football experience to speak of?? Basketball shouldn't be a conflict with football?? The majority of the potential football/other fall sports conflicts would have come from soccer. BB's challenge will be sustaining superiority in soccer, while building a football program!!

I guess if your point is BB's football will cannibalize other fall sports, you're right?? But it's here and they'll have to live with it. It will be better for the school and it's athletic programs in the long run!!
