Supposedly the land is collateral secretly promised to Chinese - so that they keep buying US Treasure Bonds (i.e. fund US government debt). Its not like the Chinese would need the desert lands for people or graze cattle (heck, they have complete cities built that are empty inside of China) so it would probably be more for the mineral rights.

 

And this really is from my view a 'theory', no claim of truth here. But lenders of money or buyers of debt usually want collateral. Would you give our government billions of dollars on an usecured line of credit?

Ouch, we leveraged half our county to fund the bloated government. Man I can't start to say how bad that is. Talk about a reason to shrink government and balance the debt.

Awesome, I hope Obama does this more and also protects more of the arctic and ocean areas too. Especially from oil companies.
