Ironically, when discussing a road trip to see a game next NFL season, Chicago is the only destination of the 8 that I already told the fam I won't consider.

I've been to the airport but never to the city. I have wanted to go to Chicago for a while however that desire is dwindling.

In all seriousness though the numbers say a lot. The vast majority of those shot are in their teens to 30's. I would wager that a lot of these shooting victims carry on similar lifestyles, not quite on the up and up.

This stuff is mainly concentrated in certain neighborhoods. Three neighborhoods make up about 1/3 (234) of all the homocides for 2016 - Austin (West Chicago) and Englewood (Southwest Chicago) and Garfield Park (West Chicago).

 

Other top hot spots are also in West and Southwest regions (pink and orange) in map below.

 

 

I used to travel to northside frequently - north of Ohara or northside of downtown next to lake. Never felt like there was any issue is those areas. Would walk to the lake shore in the evening alone. Stayed down south of Ohara for hockey tournament one time - you could tell it a 'rougher' area than the northern areas.

 

Some of the neighborhoods in the map had zero homocides in 2016 and would be considered very safe. So its a city that really represents the two America's as I have posted about at times.
