I used the word "OVERALL"... That means ALL, not top 5, top 10, etc. It means 2A's 54 teams vs. 1A's 45 teams in 2002.

Great thread guys. Lots of good points made. I voted A as being better than AA, but I am starting to think that it much closer than I had orginally thought and that AA may be better overall...

So the actual results and scores of what 2A teams played what 1A teams doesn't matter????

I did not say that it would be 1 vs 1, 2 vs 2, and so on. I just said they would win 9 or 10 games. The top team from 3A should be able to beat the top team in 2A. If you include the top twenty in both classes, they can be pretty close. Class 3A and 1A were very top heavy. The point was that 2A deserved some respect from top to bottom as the better class over 1A. It was actually closer to 3A than people gave it credit for.

In the process of crunching numbers, I found a mistake in my previous numbers. For whatever reason (not being from there for one), I kept putting Whitesburg in Class A when they were, in fact, a 2A school. That means.....

 

Class 2A was 38-34 vs. Class 1A

 

Numbers for 1A have been crunched, but not yet digested. Class 2A is up next...

Seeing Leslie Co. ranked 10th in 2A is a really bad testament to the Litkenhaus ratings.

How could it be subjective if we are talking about real games that were actually played?

 

Maybe some of games involved teams at the bottom of both classes....then we could see which class was better from 30 on down.

 

Maybe some of the games involved teams in the top 15 of both classes....then we could determine which class was better at the top.

 

Maybe almost all the games were terrible 2A teams against terrible 1A teams.....then at least we will know what the head to head games results show us.

If we get to pick the matchups that would make it very easy on me. I think I could pick the 20 matchups I like and I think 3A would win at least 15 and maybe closer to 20, you guys don't want to go there...

I'll toss this little nugget out....

 

When you average the Lit and Cantrell Rankings from late in the season last year, Mayfield's opponents averaged 60.7, while Breathitt County's averaged 51.3. That's for all 15 games.

 

In looking at their regular season schedules, Mayfield's opponents averaged 57.9, while Breathitt's dropped to 44.8.

 

The 3A and 4A teams Mayfield beat averaged 68.8 while Breathitt County's averaged 55.0.

 

These do not include Mayfield's two out of state opponents.

Using the Cantrall ratings and matching the 3A and 2A teams by ranking (1 vs. 1, 2 vs. 2, etc.), there were actually three head-to-head matchups last season. There were also three matchups where the teams had a common opponent. Here they are:

3A won 2 of the 3 head-to-head matchups, both very handily ... 3A clearly has the edge when comparing performance against a common opponent. That doesn't necessarily prove anything, but I think it clearly shows that Ñ at least with those matchups Ñ the 3A teams performed markedly better against similar competiton.
